Front Delailleur Compatibility
Hi,
I did a couple searches and did not find the answers I was looking for. I own an older K2 4000 Proflex dual suspension MTB. It is mostly stock except new tires, pads, cables. The front derailleur cage has what appears to be an excessive amount of play in it. Even with adjustments the derailleur does not easily switch between cogs, particularly the middle to large cog. If there is a way to tighten the front derailleur cage I am all ears. I believe I need a replacement and would like your guys advice. Above bike has a Shimano Deore XT bottom pull/31.8 mm clamp on type front derailleur. Rear cogs are 9 speed, 11-32 teeth, front crank set is a 3 ring 22/32/44 teeth.
Looking for a compatible replacement. Thank you in advance for your answers.

Just replace it. Face it - - the damn things wear out. Usually at all the swaged rivets holding the pieces together, causing the play you describe. Any same size/pull/swing replacement will be a welcome improvement.

I figured as much and that is what I am looking for. Still not 100% sure on a compatible replacement, tho. Shimano XT M700 series maybe, but trying to find it in a 31.8mm clamp.

Keep in mind that Shimano makes shims that allow you to use a 35.0 clamp on a 31.8 seat tube. Your LBS should be able to help you out with that. Also, if you're looking to save $$, the Deore level front dr is the same design as the XT for less $$. But if you go below the Deore to Alivio, the design may change.
