First Project: 1980s Shogun Trail Breaker MTB

Hey guys,

I'm Michael, 26 from Brisbane.

I've been a lurker on these forums for a while now, but I've only started to actively play around with bikes - much less costly than my other passion (cars - I have a 2013 Toyota 86, and I'm desperately trying to fight the urge to modify it!)

Until recently I hadn't owned a bike since I was 15. At the start of the year I bought myself a Reid Harrier SS as a cheap, basic commuter as my new years resolution to get fit again, and save on train fares, and the bike bug has bitten.

On a recent home visit to Tasmania my old man gave me his 1980s Shogun Trail Breaker. I have fond memories of this bike - something I spent quite some time on the back of in a baby seat, and when I was old enough to ride, following along Hobart's bike tracks (on my Repco Bullant with trainer wheels!).

Plans at the moment are to simply bring this beast back to life. It hadn't been used for the best part of a decade, and on a short burst down the street, I snapped the chain in half.

Aside from the usual recondition - cables, grease, bearings, etc, I plan to replace the seat, paint the front fork yellow to match the decals / bottle cage, paint the bottle cage, replace the tubes/tyres, new chain, cateye speedo, and hit up some trails around Mt Nebo, etc.

My other project at the moment is a Malvern Star Triathlete (late 80s, when they were re-badging Raleighs I believe). The Shogun is a tidy-up and ride, where the Malvern Star is a complete restoration, as it needs much more work.

Hi!

I just randomly came across your post and am interested to know how you are going with the restoration? I am thinking about buying a second hand shogun trail breaker for $50 and fixing it up. Any tips lol? I also have not ridden a bike since i was a teen and looking to get back into it and thought it might be a fun project.
