Rear Shock for apollo paradox

Hi im new here and was wondering if anyone could help me.I have an apollo paradox mountain bike which I'm using to try and get fit after suffering with a bad back for year's. I use it mainly in the local park and some light off road paths and canal paths etc.sometimes the ride seems abit harsh and was wondering if changing the rear shock would help.if so would it be best to go for a softer spring or a harder spring?
