Fastest part of an xc bike

So I probably will not be hitting the local DH trail again until next spring, so I'm working on changing my Slash into more XC mode so I can do some really epic long rides with a little less effort. This had me wondering, in practice, what makes an XC bike so much faster than a bike like my Slash when it comes to pedaling of flat and smooth inclines? I mean yes, obviously 160mm of suspension is the rear is not the most efficient thing, but modern pedaling platforms are great these days and I'm not losing that much through the rear (although definitely more than I would be on an Epic or Tallboy I'm sure).

So basically, what's that one key thing that makes an XC so fast on flat? Thinking about it, I feel like it's gotta be tires. With a 2.3 tire with big nobs in the rear and a 2.4 Trail King up front, the bike currently has a pretty slow rolling setup. Anything you guys can think of that'll make a bigger difference than some fast rolling tires?

Thanks in advance!

XC bikes are fast cuz they're like knobby tired road bikes.

Some cheap fastness is getting tires that weigh less than a pound.

You want your weight more balanced over both wheels, usually wanna get your bars closer to the front axle. Maybe a 130mm stem for the slash. It's nice to have the bars below the saddle some too, so maybe some 3" risers flipped would get you there
