I am looking at getting a pair of baggy shorts for riding. You don't want to see me in the tight ones Does anyone know anything about Bellwether shorts? I see them on ebay and they sound decent but I don't have any knowledge base to draw on. I tried looking into Zerie shorts because I saw them mentioned on here but I can't get through to them. Is there another short you would recommend, without having to spend $60+ on them?

The Bellwether shorts will only be compatible with the bellwether saddles with the ubi seat padding interface. I don't think you trek comes with a ubi compatible seat. I looked at the trek website and they didn't give any information about it. Sometimes that means that your seat is compatible with all short padding systems but I would still check with the LBS and ask them what shorts your seat is compatible with before you buy. They certainly won't tell you on e bay. That is one of the problems with e bay. Definately ask a pro wrench about this before you make a shorts purchase.

Get some Dickies Shorts you can go down on them time and time again and they hold up sweet, not to mention look great, and are super comfy. They don't cost allot of $$$ and you can wear them when you are not biking as well just an all round kick ass short, I've got tons. Here are som e guys wereing some Dickies.

OK, enough with telling the guy to buy shorts that aren't made for anything but sitting around on your butt.

For technical riding shorts several companies make great shorts but I just recently bought a pair of Pear Izumi baggies (I don't know the actual product name but they have a yellow chamois) and all I can say is: WOW! These are absolutely, 100%, without a doubt the most comfortable MTB shorts I've ever owned. They don't bind anywhere, they're lightweight, they breath well and they look good to boot! I believe they were $84 but SuperGo had them on sale for $72 (or something close to that) so you might want to check them out.

Other brands of baggies that I own/have owned and liked (in order) are:
1. Oakley
2. Sugoi
3. Fox
4. Nema

Have you ever ridden in Dickies? If not, I could understand your comments, don't knock it till you try it. I have Mt. bike shorts by Sugoi, and Fox, and I preffer my $30 Dickies over them. To each there own I was just trying to give some less expensive, and IMO great short options.

I've ridden in board shorts so I know what riding in unpadded shorts is like and I would NEVER recommend it for anyone who's planning on riding for any meaningful distance. Besides the fact that you lose out on the benefits of the padding your junk can get pretty gnarly with all the sweat rolling around down there without the sweat wicking/absorbing chamois...no thank you!

I only ride in jeans/jean shorts and when i'm in the woods, do 30 mile rides. they work fine for me, that is why I recommended them.

some people were lycra under their baggy pants... (I don't though)

So you answered my question, No you haven't ridden in them, and my friend these are not even comparable to board shorts, you have no clue, the only thing they have in common is they are shorts but other than that it;s apples and oranges. Who's saying I'm not wearing a moister obsorber under my dickies, which is what I do, and as far as padding goes, if it's a problem then you need to get a new saddle bro, cause a if you had a good one you should be able to ride 24/7, and not be hurting at all. Like I said to each his own, but don't come on here and try to knock something you know nothing about. Educate, and elaborate brother, "know before you blow" as my G-pa would say.

What do you mean they won't be comptable with the seat on my trek. Not to sound stupid but I didn't realize there was a compatability issue. The seat on the Trek is a Bontrager. Would the shop I bought the bike at know which shorts will work with that saddle or are they just going to push thier brand even if they don't work. I kind of figured padding was padding and it didn't matter.

Thanks for the help, I'll have to do some more research before I purchase.

Shorts are shorts man, they don't have to match up with a seat. Just get some and go ride. You want dickies? Then buy some lyrca tight shorts to wear underneath. You want fox or pearl izumi? Then grab some, I think all shorts are made equal.

Also make sure your gloves are compatible with your grips, don't want those failing at 30mph railing a burm, and I don't even want to get started on shoe compatability

As for the original question: Why not get some of these? ($29 @ JensonUSA) I have two pairs of Azonic, and one pair of the Fox 360 shorts that I wear all the time. I actually llike the Fox better, but there's none to be found at the $27 price I paid a few months ago.

I know quite a bit about shorts. This guy was asking about a pair of baggies to ride in. He didn't specific what type of riding he wanted. So at that point, my statement was justified ini saying shorts are shorts. You need to check your attitude before you post. This is about the 10th post I've read of yours where you have a chip on your shoulder. Get over yourself

I still stand by my previous statement. Since he never stated what type of riding he was doing and that he just needs a general short. Shorts are shorts.

Go to Wal-MArt, and get a pair of Plugg cargo shorts, thats all i wear biking. I dont think having Brand Name biking shorts makes a difference in how you look or how you ride.

You're absolutely right, NorcoDJ. However those Azonic & Fox shorts I mentioned may make you feel better if/when you wipe-out. They have padding all inside and outside.... See, short's really aren't just short's, huh?

But what do I know? I've only been in the sport since '93.

I have several pairs of Bellwether baggies with lycra liners which also have chamois. They work "ok" but aren't the greatest. They're my backup shorts in case I forgot to do laundry. They're just not as comfortable for all-day riding as my Sugois but since I got them for $5 a piece, I'm not complaining.
