Ok, yesterday I spent all day trying to fix my shifter, waste of time. My LBS said they fixed it yet when I got home, it still clicks and skips. So I am upgrading to a New Shimano Deore XT rear derauiller.Thing is I don't know what it comes with and what I need to replace on my bike. The only thing that I think I need to do this job is a chain tool. I don't know how to use one. I can't drop off my bike in the LBS because it is going to take 2 weeks to put on a new derauiller which would probably take me about 2 hours. So can somebody please, please give me a complete runthrough on installing a new rear derauiller and how to take apart my chain and put it back together. I know how to adjust the derauiller, just not install it. I am getting the new derauiller no matter what please just answer the two questions above I really need help.

I would be extremely pleased if anybody gave me a way to install a rear derauiller and use a chain tool thank you

Actually, you don't even need the chain breaker you've mentioned. Simply use a allen wrench to remove the two screws on the housing where the two pulley's are, and re-install after routing your chain thru properly. Be sure to notice the path the chain follows before removing your old derailleur!!!!

After the new derailleur is on, it's simply a few adjustments before you're on your way again....

BTW, I could have you up & going in 10 mins. Sorry you don't live near me....
Hard for me to fathom that they want your bike for two weeks....

Chain tools are pretty simple and self-explanatory, but I'll skim over it anyways. Just slip the chain on the tool, the tool is notched to fit a chain exactly. Then just twist the knob until the tool bit pushes the chain link out. Make sure you've got a shimano-type chain re-link pin for easy installation back in. Or test your luck with the original pin. And if you've got an SRAM chain, ignore everything before this and use the golden link to both disassemble and reassemble the chain. Or you can even disassemble the der. like the poster above me mentioned and ditch the whole chain idea.

As for rear der. installation, it is fairly easy for a rookie if you've got plenty of time and a good patience. You should be able to figure out how to take the old one off, just get out the correct allens and be mindful of the cable.

As for installation, it basically goes on the same way the old one came off. ;) The settings for limiting and tension are gone over with diagrams at Park Tool's site: http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQrindx.shtml Poke around there for some detailed answered with many pictures.

HEy Killer B what two pulleys are you talking about?

The ones on the derailleur.
The chain goes "behind" the botton pulley, and in "front" of the top pulley....
Then "behind" the cassette & over the top to the chainrings in front....

The two gears on the derauiller? The black things?

Just put it up as an attachment.

You don't need ImageShack for that. Simply choose "Go Advanced", then choose "Manage Attachments", and link to the file on your PC....

One thing you may or may not already know. If you're going from a traditional derailleur to the new XT (RD-M760) derailleur, you will have to get used to Rapid-Rise which operates in reverse of what you might be used to.
