Rockshox Recon rebound adjustment issues
Hello!
My new 2015 Salsa El Mariachi came with a RockShox Recon Gold 100mm tapered fork. On the bottom of the left leg there is the red knob/allen key doohicky which purportedly adjust the rebound speed. There's even a little rabbit/turtle arrow graphic on the fork leg.
My question is how the rebound adjustment is supposed to function, or at least how it's supposed to feel. Note that I had the bike turned upside down at the time, because I was trying to figure the darn thing out.
At first I just tried turning it, with not much luck. It seemed to skip/click a bit, and then I kept doing it and eventually realized that the allen key on the end of the red "tool" was actually stripping. First mistake, I guess.
So then I realize that some metal may have come off of the tool as it stripped. Upon removing the knob/tool I even pulled out a tiny sliver of metal shaving. Since the bike was upside down, is there any chance more metal may have fallen into the hole of the allen bolt adjuster and therefore inside the fork leg? Or is the allen bolt adjuster that the tool inserts into just a dead end? I am concerned some metal shaving actually made its way into the fork internals, etc.
After this, I eventually figured out that if you push and turn the knob/tool/adjuster, it rotates pretty easily. Even with my stripped adjuster it still engaged. I get approximately 180 degrees of rotation and it does seem to do something to the rebound. But there is no "good" clicking as one might expect from a fork adjustment knob. Just a consistent turning motion. Is that to be expected for this fork? And have I screwed anything up during this process? I might just get a new tool/knob in the end...

The stud that you're screwing the adjuster onto DOES go into the fork, but there's no open hole. When you service the fork it takes some force to get it moving into the fork leg. So there is no chance that any debris got inside.
Regarding stripping the adjuster... Ah, I have no idea. I've never done that, but my first step would talking to Rockshox and/or the place you bought the bike from.

Yeah, I finally got around to doing that, and it's basically what I presumed. You have to push and rotate the adjuster. There is no clicking, and you only get around 180 degrees of rotation. I even checked another bike on the shop floor and found that it behaved the same way. At least the tool stripped, and not the adjustment screw!
