Four Montana State Parks Getting New Bicycle Campsites

Today Montana State Parks announced plans to construct group bicycle campsites at four state parks in western Montana.

Improvements will be made to sites at Whitefish Lake State Park and Flathead Lake-Wayfarers State Park while new camps will be constructed at Placid Lake and Salmon Lake State Parks near Seeley.

Montana State Parks Communication manager Pat Doyle says the campsites will help the state adapt to a new wave of tourism.

“We’ve taken a look at the change of demographic as well as the growing number of people coming to Montana via long-distance bike route and this is a way to sort of look at that change and realize our state parks can accommodate this in a cost-effective manner.”

The sites will accommodate up to 10 tent spaces and be equipped with a bicycle rack, fire ring, bear resistant food lockers, potable water, bicycle maintenance stand, electrical outlets and covered shelter with picnic tables.

Construction in the parks will begin this spring.

Awesome! I wish my home state of PA would do this, at least at the more popular state parks and those on or near the official PA bike routes. I can think of four such parks off the top of my head. One of them is small (19 sites), and there are no alternatives for many miles, so if you arrive and it's full, you are in a pickle.

I will be doing a loop tour starting/ending in Missoula this June. It will be my third such tour in the last five years. After my tour in 2014 I was featured in a story in the Great Falls Tribune about bicycle tourism and the money is brings in to MT. While this great news does not affect me, I will be spending a day or two at the Twin Bridges Bike Camp again.

I haven't been to western MT since I did the ACA northern tier in '97. I have to say it was my favorite part of the entire trip. I can see why you go back there on a regular basis. It has some of the finest riding I have ever seen.

I did the NT with ACA in '99. It was my first tour ever. The following year I did a combination of the Pacific Coast, NT, Great Parks North, TransAm and Great Parks South to go from Seattle to Cortez, CO. In '09 I did the Waterton-Glacier Loop with my GF.

This year I will be heading as far south as Ennis, MT. I will mostly be on the TransAm route but will detour off of that to ride the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway before getting back on the TransAm at Twin Bridges. From the I will head to Ennis then turn north to Lewis & Clark Caverns S.P. a bit west of Three Forks. Next will Pipestone Pass to Butte then the Pintler Scenic Byway from Anaconda past Georgetown Lake to Philipsburg, where I will run into ACA's Cycle Montana tour. From there I will ride and camp along Rock Creek Rd, which includes 30 miles of dirt along the creek of the same name, which is a blue ribbon trout stream. Then it's back to Missoula.

Here is the planned route back to ACA's headquarters:

One thing I really like about touring out of Missoula is that the logistics are pretty easy. There is a nice KOA about 4 miles from the airport. From the campground office you can see the back of the Missoula REI. I ship my bike to REI, take a cab to the KOA and walk a few blocks to pick up my bike, which has been assembled and tuned, fuel for my stove and any other last minute items I might need. REI holds the box and the duffel bag that I flew with. At the end of the tour, I simply ride back to the KOA, set up camp and take my bike back to REI, which boxes it for me. I pre-arrange shipping through bikeflights.com. When I went out there in 2014 one of my flights got cancelled. Instead of arriving at 1 p.m. I arrived around 5 p.m. Had I used a LBS in town I likely would not have made it there before closing. REI is open much later. My western tours are my major vacations. I hate to have to run around taking care of logistical things.

Sweet; good info to know. I'll PM you if I go back that way to ride one of these days, :). Agreed that making the logistics of shipping a bike easier is a big deal.

Hi, I am the OP, I live about three blocks from the Missoula KOA. When you are here, give me a shout out if you ever need anything, I have bike lifts / stands / tools, etc. in my garage. Always like to meet bikers and willing to lend a assistance if needed.

How about a ride from the airport? Getting a cab ain't quite as easy as it is in Philly. ;)

Seriously...Thanks for the offer. Surprisingly, last time the folks at REI offered to let me use one of their repair stands to attached my racks.
