Okay who has done this ride in the past and who is doing it again this year??

I'm going to be doing this ride with some girlfriends of mine and I have never done it. Whats it like??

I know lastyear it rained and rained some more. :)

I have... close to a dozen times.

I think that last year the registration closed early April. It was a lonely, wet slog last year. I was tempted to ride to my place in Dillon as I turned to ascend Swan Mtn.

It was nothing like the '98 ride ...hottest one on record at near 100 degrees.

It's an awesome route.
The BBQ in Avon is good.
The rest is a mixed bag.
There are lots of riders ...3000 plus all the poachers.
The weather can be all over the board, as you well know being from CO.
The descent from Vail Pass is always my biggest concern. It's a steep route with lots of tired souls. Then the roll into Avon after that descent will find those same tired souls hanging onto stranger's wheels ...sometime a paceline of more than 30.

It's a great ride to do with friends.

I'm also glad I'm doing this with my girly friends :)

Lets just hope the weather treats us nicely.

I rode it last year. Well, actually I bailed out at Loveland Ski Basin. Was just to cold and wet to continue. The Alpine S&R medics encouraged me to do so.

I'm riding agn this year too.

My training advice....

CLIMB, CLIMB, CLIMB..

I don't know what part of Colorado you are in, but I'll be moving to Wheat Ridge tomorrow. I'll be right off the Clear Creek Bikeway. For starters, I'll be riding from my apartment to the top of Lookout Mountain on a regular basis.

Over on http://www.bikejournal.com we have a virtual club of locals (Colorado) folks called CLUB HYPOXIA and we have a training ride schedule that we setup each year to prepare for the TBP. You can view the Hypoxia web site at http://www.clubhypoxia.com . We'd love to have you along! Nothing like suffering with a few friends. :D

There are lots of fun training routes.

Since you have a base in Leadville, I'll start by suggesting the Copper Triangle. Team Evergreen has used this ride as a primer for the TBP for years. It has three passes, climbs a little more than 7K feet and runs for about 83 miles. It's also really easy to self support. It's really everything that the TPB is.

Another is to ride to Echo Lake from Bergen Park and then back. That's a good 2.5 to 3 hour ride.

You can extend the Echo Lake ride by descending to Idaho Springs and then riding back to Bergen Park via the frontage road along I-70. Team Evergreen calls this ride the reverse loop of hell.

Just two more... Ride from Idaho Springs to Loveland Ski Area and back down again. The frontage road has very little traffic and so it's easy to ride abreast. Or ride from Idaho Springs to Winter Park and back. You can cut it short and turn around at Berthoud Pass.

All great training rides with vert and miles.

I have ridden from Idaho Springs to Georgtown but turned around there so it looks like I need to work on riding to Loveland. :)

Nick it's great to know how the Copper Triangle compares to TBP. I'm already excited!

Finally got off of my lazy back-side. Did 35 minutes on the rollers before the end came... :(

Guess I have to learn how to ride them agn. Not that I was any good last season either.... LOL

When you say "the end came"....what do you mean by that? Is everything ok....

Pwnt - The "end" means I came off of the rollers and crashed. I guess its just a nicer way of saying it. ;)

I have a few scrapes etc... but am fine otherwise. Other than a bruised pride.

PWNT - Thanks! Yep, rollers REQUIRE some skill to master. I am far from mastering that skill. I just hope I can without breaking any bones. (or putting holes in the sheet rock) ;)


Back on topic, I finally registered for the TBP. I also noted a lot of cool new merchandise this year.
If this job prospect turns out, I may have to "kit" up with some extra goodies. :)

ZenLC and I are going out for a short snowshoe jaunt today for some cross training. It won't be for long since I don't have a good way to stay hydrated in these temps. But gotta get out and do something!

I noticed that the group ride thread was getting a little diverted due to Triple ByPass discussion (yes, I'm guilty of that)...

I really REALLY wanna do this but man that entry fee is steep. I was ribbing a little in the other thread but "really", how can the justify that kinda money?

Where does the money go?
The majority of the registration fees go directly to cover the cost of the ride. Everything from permits to police patrols, aid station food, insurance, portable toilets, jerseys and finish line barbeque are covered out of registration fees. TE pays a small but very dedicated part-time staff to manage the ride. A percent of the proceeds is distributed annually to community groups in the cycling community and the greater community in which we live and ride. See our beneficiary list.


Hmmmm........I'm gonna have to think about this one for a bit.


For the three rides I want to do this year its going to be $260.00 just in registration fees alone.
