Share with me your experiences with this ride. I have friends from work that are asking me to go. It sounds kinda brutal but fun at the same time.

Wow, no on huh? Ok well, the ride is Memorial day weekend. You race a train from Durango to Silverton. The race/ride has a ton of history. Check out the website for more info.

I haven't done it personally, but a lot of my teammates do it every year and love it. Beautiful riding down there...

I did it last year, it was fun. Amount of brutality of course depends on your fitness level and what your expectations are. I'm also probably the only idiot in the history of the race to crash on the descent into Silverton.
If you do go and race it instead of doing the citizens ride, my advice is to absolutely be in the front of the pack at the end of the flat section at the beginning of the race. Stay with the leaders up the first climb. If you can hang with them thru the rollers that follow, you should be fine. Attack on Molas if you're in position to.

I have ridden last three years. The first year it snowed! But weather OK the last two-- Bring warm biking clothes. The 1st 11 miles are flat. Then climbing starts. If you enter citizen class, you start in a big mob with the train. If you enter category or age groups, you start a little earlier than the train. Getting back from Silverton takes a little planning. And motel rooms are scarce so you should get reservations now if you need a room.
