Colorado Springs/Denver T-shirt Idea
Hey Folks,
I'm a complete bicycle geek and very saddened by the recent passing of bicyle guru Sheldon Brown. I'm sure you've heard by now.
As saddening as his death is, I was thinking about having t-shirts screen printed locally (Manitou Springs, CO - his kind of place) in his honor. I have a couple favorite images of him that I think would make great t-shirts designs. THERE WILL BE NO PROFIT MADE IN THIS EFFORT, so I don't plan to make contributions to his family (although I'm not against it) or to any other cause such as MS...no disrespect. I simply want to be asked in public, "Who is that on your shirt," and be able to talk about Sheldon Brown. There may be some ethical question here about walking around with a picture of the deceased on your shirt, I understand that but in going with my gut, I don't think anyone will be offended. After all, his image is all over the internet and rightfully so.
Here's the rub: The set-up cost for an 8"x11" color print is $120.00 (gasp!) and the cost of the actual printing to a t-shirt is $9.00. Obviously, I'm not going to do that for one t-shirt. Are there any takers out there geeky and inspired enough by this man to join? If not interested or opposed to this idea, please contain any bombasts. I'd like to keep this positive. Likewise, if someone out there has a less expensive way to carry this out, please share! I've researched DIY screen printing and it looks like NO FUN.
Have a great day!

May be a lame idea but here it is:
Create an iron-on transfer yourself. I created some t-shirts honoring my father for a charity run last summer using iron transfer sheets I bought at Michaels for some nominal amount. You print out what you want on any ink jet printer and then iron it on. You get 8.5x11 to work with.
Just an idea.

Do remember to flip any words you want as it will iron on backwards. I created my deisgn then brought it into an art program and flipped the entire image, then printed it out.

You could post your design on a site like www.spreadshirt.com so that other people could order it.

The iron-ons work really well with a decent printer. It's pretty damn fun giving old t-shirts new life with pictures of Sheldon. (Irony not intended.) I highly suggest it if you have some time on your hands.
I used this image for the first shirt. Not terribly artistic but an interesting conversation piece nonetheless.
Thanks again for the ideas and image suggestions. More to come. I'll try to post a couple if any turn out really well.
