Martha's Vineyard

going with the family last week in June. bringing all the bikes and told the kids they had to go on at least 2 family rides cuz last time we did only 1. anyway, anyone been riding out there lately? any news from the island? I think I will torture them by making them bike to the beach ;-)

So where are you staying, and are you taking a car over? By the time my son was readily willing to ride with me, he was off to college. On our longest ride together after that, he went pretty fast. I complained that he didnít give me a chance to warm up, and he complained his gears werenít working properly.

Iíve only been able to stay more than one day on the Island a few times, always in Oak Bluffs, my favorite town, though Iíve spent too little time in Edgartown to judge. Iíve always parked in Woods Hole and gone with the bike by ferry. On two occasions I did ride from Kenmore Square to Woods Hole, about 80-90 miles mainly via Rte 28, and my wife drove us home to Boston.

Our family usually spent a couple weeks in Rockport on Cape Ann, and I could traverse between there and Boston by bike, about 40-50 miles, and Commuter Rail, with the bike.

Wifey & I & friends used to rent in West Tisbury which I actually prefer so we could get access to Lambert's Cove Beach during regular hours.

I love that you rode all the way to the ferry!

Two suggestions: the bike path to Edgartown, about 12 miles round trip, and pretty easy. Also, about 13 miles to Menemsha, some rolling hills, a little more effort. For a longer ride and some hills, Aquinnah (formerly Gay Head). Nice ride, but very few bike paths going that way.

Yes, I brought an old Trek 950 mountain bike with some street tires. Normally I'll have the Madone, but this year I didn't have any riding agenda so I took it easy. Made four rides, the longest out to Menemsha.

We rented a house in Edgartown, located about halfway between town and south beach. It all worked out really well.

And yeah, I spent some money. They're not shy on the Vineyard...

I like your photos, rr6. They nicely capture the joie d’vivre of summer on the Vineyard. Are you the Oyster Man?

It was a nice ride out to Menemsha. And I caught a cool pic of a huge flag and a boat named Freedom cruising beneath it. Go figure.

awww thanks. we were really looking forward to it. we used to go every summer w/ friends before marriage & kids. then I took like a 15yr break when the in-laws showed up. Wifey still went with the kids but I couldn't hack close quarters with the MIL. still miss those young wild single days parting 'till the sun came up, drinking champagne in the Jeep on the beach. those were clams actually in Menemsha. I liked their sign: "seating out back" turned out to be a crude bench and big wire spools, so I had to. my kids were like come on Mom is waiting, and I'm like, no we need clams right here right now, and they each had one with me but I insisted they get a picture. what I really needed was my Sister, some tequila and a beer ;-)

Nice thread. Brought back memories of when I was younger. Went to the Vineyard, rented bikes, and took a spin around the entire island !

No idea how many miles it was, but I remember being exhausted at the end, more for being the last place rider of the group and trying to keep up than the miles IIRC

Nice relaxing place to ride !

(we even went for a horseback ride on the beach. that made my knees more sore than the bike ride

I know I'm a bit late to the thread, but I frequent that island, and I would just like to advise avoiding up island (Chilmark, Aquinnah, West Tis), espeicailly during the summer, because even the main roads are incredibly thin, and it tour buses come way to often, often way too fast.

true that. can't get the vineyard house this summer. gonna rent a motel room opposite Marconi Beach & the CCRT in Wellfleet, instead. old stomping grounds, tried & true
