Back Bay Bicycles, Porland ME -- closing
Bike shop's pending closure marks end of era for Portland cyclists - The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram
End of an era. Loved the shop, I'd make the trek north to Portland for special trips to this specific shop, just like I'd plan a weekend day for a visit to Harris Cyclery down in Newton MA. Nice article, though, and funny enough, one of the quoted customers, Kevin Coyne, was also a customer of ours -- I think between his bikes and others he sent my way, I must have built 4-5 Aegis frames into bicycles. |

I was totally heartbroken when I found out two weeks ago, that the sister shop Back Bay Bikes, in Boston's Back Bay is closing (I thought the Portland shop was called Papa Wheelies.) I have praised Back Bay Bikes to the hilt on Bike Forums; they really treated me well.

Having the LBS do it all, in my case is a really good deal. The shop is one block away, and they will fix many things at a convenient time for me. They are so expert that they can do these things quickly, better than me, and often spot problems that I did not see. Whenever I leave the shop, the bikes ride as if new again. Because the bikes are a major transportation mode for me, keeping them in good repair is critical. We save a lot of money on transportation, so further using the LBS is even more cost-effective. I tip well, not, “To Insure Prompt Service,” but because I am so appreciative of their work. Hats off to Back Bay Bikes.

A bittersweet site......the end of Hwy 20 East......but for some the start of Hwy 20 West!!! Jim and his bikeshop. A real treat to visit and meet Dan and Dave who have taken terrific care of all Jim's cycling needs. Hooray for our LBS's!!! I lost count of the bike shops I visited along the way.......especially for tubes! |

The Portland shop was not affiliated with the Boston store. For my needs, that shop on Mass Ave over by MIT - Cambridge Bicycles? - and Broadway Bicycles Coop were the go to places. |

The are referring their customers to Cambridge Bikes, but it certainly will take a while to establish such a relationship. I'll have to visit there before I have a problem. |

Thanks for the clarification, I had not read the article, and Papa Wheelies (in Portsmouth NH...D'Uh :o) is not mentioned. Just seeing "Back Bay Bikes" got me started. Nonetheless, thanks for letting me go on about Boston's Back Bay Bikes.

I found out this Sunday that they are staying OPEN. it turns out that the closing was prompted because they were about to lose their lease, but that impending real estate deal fell through. I'm glad that it was not due to lack of sales. BBB opened around 1992 on Newbury St, where Newbury Comics is now located. I think it was around 2002 when they lost that lease and moved to Comm Ave. The owner told me that they had opened the same year as Back Bay Bikes in Portland. |
