Tour de Staten Island

Is anyone going on this ride? Has anyone done it before? I think it's your one chance to ride through Freshkills. I'm considering it.

It's a great ride and a pretty easy one, so it's a good way to start the season. The one issue I had in Freshkills was that there was a lot of rusty water (I keep telling myself it was just rust and mud...nothing else) across the roadway that you couldn't avoid riding through. Everyone finished that segment spattered. However, there was a rest stop right before that segment that you looped back by at the end of it where there was running water. I wound up using my water bottle to wash my bike and myself before continuing on.

Other than that little thing, it was really pleasant and I'm doing it again this year.

Have volunteered as a safety marshal a few times; always a lot of fun.
Will be there again this year with my folder; just like last time:

It is a rare opportunity to ride in Freshkills. I have ridden in there and unless theres been a lot of change theres not a lot of riding in there. Ive never done the Tour De Staten Island. Its for a good cause but I would never pay to ride here. If you really want to ride on Staten Island you might want to connect the Staten Island Bicycling Association. I think membership is $30 for the year and Im sure they will let you ride as a guest for free as long as you fill out a waiver. They have groups from C-B+. I think the A's are kinda scattered. You can also visit Fresh Kills when they open it periodically for previews.

Andy @ascherer and I will be there. I haven't done it before. I've been looking at maps and such to find nice routes there, but it looks pretty boring. I assume this ride will offer some decent routes. The ferry terminal in Manhattan is only three miles from my home, so I've been thinking it would be a good place to get away to when I want to ride in a less dense area. And the ferry ride is nice.

I've done it the past 3 years; and will do it again this year. Its a pretty decent ride. The ride through Fresh Kills is actually a pretty amazing nature ride. As far as getting sprayed with muddy water; only people without fenders get a rooster tail of biotoxins. :o

Second time doing that tour, great ride. Some sections of road were terrible but manageable.

Have done it about 4 times now. Always a lot of fun.

Hey @wilfried, I'm glad we got together to do this. I had a really nice time. The pace was good. The weather was outstanding. The scenery wasn't as bad as I expected. I like the fact that traffic there was so light. I wonder how much worse it gets on the other days of the week. I suspect not terribly bad except on Hylan Blvd. Living in Manhattan and working in the Bronx, it's nice to have an easy-to-reach place where it's quieter. And actually, the views of the bay from the eastern shore are pretty spectacular.

The rest of us stood on the bow deck on the ferry ride back. It was really windy and cold. I got such a chill that I had to get into bed upon arriving home.

We had a few rude drivers pass us. That's the first time it happened to me in many months, so there's one demerit for Staten Island, but I'm willing to forgive.

@noglider, thanks for giving me the impetus to get out of bed. It was an easy, mellow ride. You forgot to mention the mcmansions. I had lunch with one friend, and went to visit another, but I promptly fell asleep on her sofa. All in all it was a very nice day.

How about some nice vanity (and fun)?

BTW, I think I saw your bike. Nice Brompton. Mine looks a lot the worse for wear.

@wilfried and @noglider - it was really great and fun to do this together, I know Andre agrees. Let's plan some more rides soon.
