super buggy Saturday. guess it's time to break out the head net again. been a cpl months since I tackled my nemesis hill, had to stop 1/2 way up. it's been even longer since I did it 3 times on the same ride w/ no stops

did not pass any turtles on the trails. the only snake I saw was squished on a paved road at the entrance. but I did pick up this hitch hiker, possibly in the tall grass, in the field, at the beginning of the ride. felt him crawling on my leg when I was taking my footwear off. I did make periodic tick-checks but he may have been camo'd in with my socks & sandals? I still had a nice layer of insect repellent on my body so he had not yet found a tasty spot to bite

cutting back on my road trips to NY so hoping to get more riding in. took the Assabet North to the train station then South to the nature preserve & River

I like that they saved this old rail section

was tempted to ride this but I had the tire pumped to their max. maybe I'll try it with the MTB

and so begins the season of brown

only 1 loose pooch. at least he wasn't erratic or moving fast

Ridable with a road bike?

Hi all. I haven't posted on bike forums in about 100 years. I couldn't believe my username was still active.

I'm looking for opinions about what routes through the Assabet River Refuge, if any, are doable on a road bike. I've ridden the full length of the Track Road from Sudbury Rd to Route 117 and that was fine. Are any other paths, e.g. the Patrol Rd, White Pond Rd, Harry's Way, Taylor's Way, or Winterberry Way reasonably ridable on a road bike? Also, if some are ridable, are they ridable all year round or best only during dry seasons?

I'm mostly a road cyclist so I'm looking for ways to use the refuge to connect between various roads in the area.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

none other than the paved "rail trail" are rideable, comfortably

White Pond Rd north and out of the preserve is paved

lots of 100? yr old paved rods broken and overgrown but wide enough for trucks

interior trails are dirt and gravel

I've seen road bikes coming thru as part of what must be a longer, larger route. but you don't see road bikers in the preserve. so I'll bet you can make your connections. but mostly only if it is dry

I probably have pics of every road and trail in the there, but don't have them catalogued

Thanks, rumrunn!!

I wonder whether they plan to pave that northern boundary road down to Sudbury Rd.

I was able to find a road biker who had a route that ran end-to-end on Winterberry. It looks like there's a half-mile segment of it that's unpaved so maybe in a really dry season it might be passable.

Anyway, thanks so much for your help.

Nice all-terrain rides there rumrunn6. And wow, I did not know about the northern section. Here's my view of the lower one.

THANK YOU
yes! I've ridden that section a cpl times, Wifey & kids liked the ice cream shop not far from the blue caboose!

so the trail goes thru Maynard which is nice, but I often take my mountain bike around the perimeter roads of the refuge. it's pretty tame for a mountain bike. rarely, when there are no hikers, I'll venture into some interior trails, but mostly I stick to the perimeter roads. but there's also a fun section at the end of the paved trail that dumps you out on a dirt road next to the river. it goes pretty far until a dead end where there used to be a train bridge over the river. that last part is just a foot trail w/ big holes & sometimes downed trees. never see anyone in there but it is beautiful

it's May, so the habitat has water now

ppl moved the bridge to the water side. don't know who moved the logs to enlarge the dam. ppl? beaver? muskrat?

there's a lodge way out in the distance, you can't get to

happy home

ppl leave walking sticks at each end of Otter Alley. I prefer to walk sideways w/ feet straddling 2 logs, for stability. she didn't want any advice from me. but w/ 2 walking sticks, it was pretty stable

seemed like a happy family, albeit small

no wings yet
