Tour de Bronx?
I've signed up for the TdB again, even though I swore a few years ago that I was done with it. Has anybody done it the last few years? Has it gotten any better? The last time I did it the ride was totally jammed up, nobody could move. I ditched the 40 mile and started following the 25 mile route just to get back to the NYBG where I'd left my car. I ended up being the first person to arrive.
In prior years I always had a good time, even if it were slow. It is an easy ride, maybe a few hills in Riverdale. Have they figured out the logistics? I don't want a ride where you go a few miles then have to wait a half hour for an escort to take you to the next spot. I took my kids on the Tour de Brooklyn one time and even they thought it was too slow, and they were only about 8 or 9 at the time. But the Bronx ride was different the first times, but not that last time for me. Anybody doing it this year? October 22. |
Have volunteered a few times. Last time was about 3 years ago. The route is usually well marked. You don't have to go with the mass after they break for the rest stops. You can either skip the break(s); or go before the official take off. The reason I stopped volunteering is because the last few years - it's been scheduled the same day as the NYC Bike MS ride.
I feel since the TdB is free and riders have to pay($275 minimum I think) for the MS ride - the MS riders are more deserving of my volunteer help(safety marshal). |
No more takers on this one? I'm going to turn it into a 65-70 mile ride by riding from Brooklyn up to the start, 17 miles, and then riding down to 90th St and 2nd for a pizza and beer. After that it is the Q train home. I just hope it isn't too slow.

I thought last year was great. There were no jams at least on my part of the ride and there were plenty of food and all the freebies we wanted. It was a bit windy but the organizers and volunteers couldn't have done a better job IMO.
Q is my local train too but since it doesn't go to Bronx I have to transfer to D train to get to the event. Then I'd ride home afterwards. |
I signed up, will do the 25. That plus riding to and from it will be over 40 for the day.

Do you need to register or can you sign up at the start?

I'm going to ride all the way up, then back to 86th and 2nd for the Q. There's this really good, really Italian, pizza cafe at 90th and 2nd called Cafe San Matteo. It was authentically Italian, more so than even the well known places in the city. After 65 miles I'll deserve a pizza. |
Thanks for the pizza recommendation. I looked it up and it really does look good. Maybe I'll see you there!

They were indeed letting people register there in the morning. Very well attended and once it spread out it moved no problem. They uploaded the route to Ride with GPS which help follow the route.

It should be quiet around Yankee stadium , now that they are done for the year..

My only complaint was that they sent an email stating an 8am start, but that meant opening of the registration. They didn't really start until after 10. I had a good time, was mostly at the front of the pack. It was funny hearing these guys complain about the hills at the end of the 40 mile ride. These weren't all that difficult for me, and I'm 62 years old and overweight. These guys all looked to be in much better shape than I am.
