Hi. I'm looking for ride partners in the NYC-area. I usually do rides of 30 to 60 miles with an average of 16 to 20 mph. Anybody in for it?

Edit 10/5/05: In the meantime we have set up our own forum for NYC local rides. The group is growing steadily. If you are interested in joining rides just send a PM to wheezl (further down on this page) :)

Where do you ride? I'm in Clifton, NJ but can do Manhattan on the weekends. I don't live by an odometer but I think we're around the same range on both stats.

stevie68 08-08-05 01:30 PM

I usually ride in Central Park. But i would definitely like to ride in other places.

JungleCat 08-08-05 01:50 PM

Here's the dilly... I estimate my usual ride from Clifton to Glen Ridge and back is about 35-40 miles with some decent hills and one killer hill (Eagle Rock Reservation) which I call "Terminator 2: Judgement Day". My friends and I name all the hills after Arnold movies ha ha. I did this ride just under 3 hrs last weekend. The only crap parts are cutting through some parks where peeps get in the way and some traffic lights.

You're definitely welcome to come out here but if you wanna do an assessment of each other's riding skilz b4 that, I'm def down to meet in CP this weekend. I haven't made it there this year yet.

Whatever you want to do is cool.

Steve

I think an assessment ride in CP sounds like a really good idea. How about sometime in early afternoon. Sathurday and Sunday are both fine for me. I certainly like the idea to dome hills at a later point. I'm mising mountains and hills a lot.

Are you still looking for ride partners? Just discovered Bike Forums, signed up 5 minutes ago and realized I misspelled cycling in my handle. Oh well. I match you on distance, am on the lower end on speed. Usually go NYC->GW Bridge->9W routes, and am around 16 mph because the hills kill me. Around 20-22 on flats, though.

wheezl 09-06-05 06:29 PM

I have only had a road bike for a little over a week (hybrid before that). I ride about 75-100 miles per week at commuting speeds (traffic slows me down) and I usually ride after work in Central Park or Prospect Park about 20-30 miles a day. My GPS unit tells me I do the Prospect Park loop about 19mph though I suppose that is mostly me bombing down the hill. I can't seem to crack 33mph there. :)

Mostly just trying to get fit.

Doing the TA Century on Sunday though the farthest I have ridden in a day so far has been about 65miles. So I guess I will see how that goes. I am hoping if I keep it in the 12-15mph range I won't get very tired.

Anyone ride after work in CP ?

cjc_cyling 09-06-05 07:33 PM

Yeah, have done *way* too many loops in CP though I haven't ridden in PP. Last time I rode there, I averaged about 17.5 over 5 laps. Alas, I only break 30 mph with the help of gravity. =) Let me know if you're interested in a CP/PP ride to test the waters. (How does PP compare? Have never ridden there, only attempted to fly kites.)

For starters it is about 3.3 miles (I think) so the "Hill" comes around more often than in CP. I haven't actually ridden my new road bike in Central Park yet so I don't know how fast I'd go. on my MTB/Hybrid I recall averaging around 15mph for perhaps 4 laps on a good day.

I am not going to do too much extra riding this week since I have no idea how I'm going to feel on the century. Though I am probably getting concerned over nothing. Perhaps if you have time tomorrow around 6:30 in CP that could work. I'd probably be up for 4 laps before heading back to Brooklyn.

cjc_cyling 09-06-05 08:22 PM

Ha, maybe I should go do some loops around PP instead - I need the hill training! If you're certain you're OK riding before a century, tomorrow works for me. Otherwise I've no problem waiting until you recover next week. Sounds like at minimum you'd be about my speed; you could also blow me completely out of the water.

Well it's not much of a hill is my point. The century isn't until sunday, I have plenty of time to ride. I don't think I'll be blowing anyone away :) I'll probably be taking it a little easy anyway. And I am pudgy! No worrries.

Anyone doing the NYC Century on September 11?

Yeah, Not really excited about getting up that early though :)

Perhaps we should all wear Mr. Peanut costumes or something.

wheezl 09-07-05 06:35 PM

Had a good ride today after work with cjc_cyling and slvoid. It was a lot of fun and they are both just like on TV!

slvoid is damn fast :) Drafting him makes me feel much faster than I am!! :P

With all of the chatter I have no idea how many laps we did.

monsterkidz 09-08-05 08:01 AM

Man, I have to move into the city, by the time I ride my beater commuter home to Queens, I really don't feel up to taking my road bike back to CP.Bleh Are you guys all riding the century together? My girl and I are gonna ride, but it would be cool to see some people from the forums too.

slvoid 09-08-05 09:36 AM

I dunno if we're doing the century or just taking a quick jaunt up to river road to practice doing some long climbs then back home on sunday.

Don't worry, I'm not that fast, it only feels fast drafting me cause my bag causes this huge pocket of dead air behind me. You can fit like 3 people in there. You were actually sprinting at a pretty good clip yesterday, I was actually surprised we passed so many roadies, including that smoking hot chick on her TT bike.

I did see one idiot right after I left the park with a HID light pointed square at the ground 10 ft in front of him, what good would that do right.

I *was* kinda suprised actually. You had been so strong up until that point but you sure did have a hard time passing her :D

slvoid 09-08-05 10:12 AM

Something just came in and drained the energy out of me, I could barely pedal, I was forced to stay behind her in that sweet sweet draft just to keep up...

You should just ride your road bike into the city. :)

timmhaan 09-08-05 11:42 AM

i'd like to hook up with you guys for a few rides here and there. due to my recent accident and 4 weeks off the bike, my fitness is crap. plus my leg isn't 100% healed yet so i'm not doing the century on Sunday. but i'd always be down for rides in CP or PP or River Road or anywhere really.

monsterkidz 09-08-05 11:58 AM

I usually try to get up to Piermont/ Nyack ever weekend. I could be up for some easy laps in CP after post Century next Tues. or Wed. We should all be taking advantage of this weather while it lasts.

slvoid 09-08-05 12:03 PM

I think my girlfriend, cjc, and i are going up to river road this sunday if anyone wants to come.
My gf and I right now are undecided between that or cutting in line in the nyc century.

I was actually thinking of skipping the crowds and everything then organizing our own bikeforums NYC century later in the month. the green route markers are going to be on the road for at least 2-3 months. I know last year we were able to ride the route a full 8 months afterwards by following the route markers.

yes. registered today.
I'll have no clue who the hell anyone is, but will certainly be in formation somewhere.

wheezl, don't worry, you should be able to handle the ride just fine. sounds like you get a lot of time in the saddle from your commutes...don't even think about the distance.

Like I said, I would totally go if I wasn't doing the century on sunday.

I do like the idea of rounding up BF folks to do the route again in a few weeks though.

wheezl, slvoid and I did 4 laps around CP... The ride reminded me of an email I got about a month ago - included for your enjoyment:

Cyclists are the biggest sandbaggers and secret trainers around. They'll say anything to soften you up for the kill. Don't let this happen to you. Study this handy rider's phrasebook to find out what they really mean when they say:

"I'm out of shape"
Translation: I ride 400 miles a week and haven't missed a day since the Ford administration. I replace my 11-tooth cog more often than you wash your shorts. My body fat percentage is lower than your mortgage rate.

"I'm not into competition. I'm just riding to stay in shape"
Translation: I will attack until you collapse in the gutter, babbling and whimpering. I will win the line sprint if I have to force you into oncoming traffic. I will crest this hill first if I have to grab your seat post, and spray energy drink in your eyes.

"I'm on my beater bike"
Translation: I had this baby custom-made in Tuscany using titanium blessed by the Pope. I took it to a wind tunnel and it disappeared. It weighs less than a fart and costs more than a divorce.

"It's not that hilly"
Translation: This climb lasts longer than a presidential campaign. Be careful on the steep sections or you'll fall over -- backward. You have a 39x23 low gear? Here's the name of my knee surgeon.

"You're doing great, honey"
Translation: Yo, lard ass, I'd like to get home before midnight. This is what you get for spending the winter decorating and eating chocolate. I shoulda married that cute Cat 1 racer when I had the chance.

"This is a no-drop ride"
Translation: I'll need an article of your clothing for the search-and-rescue dogs.

"It's not that far"
Translation: Bring your passport.
