Anyone have any recommendations for nice places for road cycling in southeastern CT? I'm in Groton right now. So far I just have a big loop that goes through Gale's Ferry and Ledyard area, but it's only like 25-30 miles long. Got any recommendations for safe / legal routes in the 50-75 mile range?

there's the seaport metric century which starts and ends in Groton. Also enter other area towns, I'm sure many pass through or near Groton.

I'm from Wallingford and still have my P.O.S walmart mtb I've started the Road Bike fund in the meantime I've been riding up Ward St. Est. leading up to bigger hills like Whirlwind Hill. Mostly recreational/exercise riding.

I live in Avon and typically ride by Collinsville and out to Mass. I'm a teacher so in the summer I typically ride 350+ mi weekly, school year 200 miles weekly. I ride a Blue RC4 so if you see me say hi.

Groton/New London area here also. I live off the double lane rt.32 in Quaker Hill. I am just a beginner on a road bike and my current route was only 10 miles using a mountain bike. I am looking to do more since I just got a dedicated on-road bike today. Any suggestions?

Newbie here, just getting into riding mostly with my young kids on the various parts of the Farmington Valley Greenway/Canal MUP (I'm in Avon). Did my first group ride on Sunday, it was fun! I'm not sure how much more riding I'll get in before it starts getting too cold/wet (told you I was a newbie!), but looking forward to hopefully meeting up with some of you next spring.

I grew up in Quaker Hill and I used to ride to QH Elem school, which involved a nice climb home. That was a long time ago.

As far as longer rides go, you can head south through New London(a risky endeavor) or scoot southwest to the shore and go along Long Island Sound and from there you can go as far west as you want. From QH you can head up north on Old Colchester Rd and that opens the way to nice places and again you can go as far as you want, Devils Hopyard is a nice destination as is the nearby CT River valley. To the east you can cross the NL Bridge to Groton Stonington and Ledyard which is nice riding territory, avoiding the main roads. The bridge in Montville is OK, it was not signed as "No Bikes" but it could be.

I use mapmyride.com since its free, you can search by town and add your own rides.

Don't forget Long Island! A ferry from New London to Orient Point puts you in the heart of great Long Island riding country!

Live in W. Hartford, work three or four days a week in Bridgeport, the rest in Hartford. For a while I had no car, so I would ride my folder (either my Xootr swift or my Raleigh Twenty) to Union Station in Hartford, take Amtrak to New Haven, then switch to Metro North to get down to the Bridge. Now I have a car, so when time permits, I drive to NH, park for free in the lot near W. Cross High School, and ride to the station. Every now and then, I get to make the full ride from New Haven to Bridgeport and back. And of course, I am out and about in Hartford after hours.

I also live in West Hartford. I was a bike commuter into Htfd pretty much all last year. Now I work in Simsbury, and its too dark to go over the mountain (for me at least). I'll start that back up in the spring. I got into road biking this summer and have been riding around NW CT (Farm. Vally, East Hartland, Barkhamstead). I have to say I have encountered few problems on my rides and see a good amount of other cyclists, which is very encouraging. I'll keep riding until the snow falls and they treat the roads, then it's on to my new rollers for the winter. Thanks GuitarWizard for starting this thread.

I live in northeastern ct. I typically ride woodstock, pomfret, ashford, hampton, canterbury, anything in this area. I ride with TCC and Expo Wheelmen for group rides. There are some strong riders around here.

i'm in shelton...usually ride the shelton trails, but do most of my road biking in upper shelton into monroe.....

Are there any popular lunch/coffeeshops among the Southeastern CT cycling contingent? For anyone who is a NYC/NJ transplant (like myself), I'm thinking along the lines of the Runcible Spoon and Bunbury's - ie the place where every cyclist stops for a snack. I usually ride by myself from Westport and I"m suprised I never run into other cyclists at my lunch stops.

I'm a Long Islander, but I've loved every one of my rides along the Connecticut shore, from Darien to Newport, RI. All the shoreline towns I've seen mentioned so far are great memories for me. Get out and ride 'em!

I don't live in CT, but i'm pretty close to the border in Monson, MA. On Mondays (and eventually Fridays as well) i commute from Monson to Springfield (STCC) and back on my bicycle for school.

Does anyone ever ride Milton/Litchfield to Goshen? Or just in that area? I never see anyone and I don't know if the hills are actually that bad or if I'm just out of shape... And I'm not talking about working up a sweat, I'm talking cranking on the granny gear with all my might, legs and lungs burning. Sometimes I'll come around a corner and look up and just know that I'm F'ed. Is there anyone I can share my pain with?

I live in Oxford and try to get up to Woodbury, Washington, Bethlehem, Litchfield, etc. whenever I can. Beautiful part of the world . You're going to find great hills everywhere all through Litchfield county. Count yourself "lucky" to get to ride them.

Years ago I did a ride out of Torrington into Litchfield then north on RT 63 to Goshen. Took a left on RT 4 and then tried to hook back around Mohawk Mountain but ended up coming over it...or at least it felt that way. Good times....

They ain't called " The Litchfield Hills" for nothin'!!!!!!!!! My tandem partner Denise and I hammer our 55 lbs Univega Sport thru Warren then back roads to Milton ,Litchfield and sometime Goshen before coming down Rte 202 back to Waramaug. Great training for the Bloomin' Metric in May. If you get onto some of the back roads up in the hill towns , there are some great views.....and fast down hills!!!!!!!!!!
