My dad lost his license on the spot a few years back when he caused a crash. The crash(no injuries) while minor still allowed the police to take his license. We had been trying to take his license for a few months prior to his accident. He was in his mid 80s when this occurred. If you mention mandatory license testing for over 75 or so the old folks scream age discrimination.

I've seen articles about senior citizens that are competent drivers don't really mind the testing as that it makes the road safer for anyone. I'm not speaking from experience or anything... Heck my 83 year old grandmother just drives around without a liscense.

One thing that really bothers me is we penalize the behavior irregardless of the damages that behavior caused. Yet different behaviors get different fines based on the severity of damage they usually cause. So speeding is not as bad as drunk driving, so speeding should always be lesser punishment, so we have a system were getting caught in a speed trap on the freeway is the same fine as speeding on a residential street and killing a boy. Which is a lower fine then getting caught at a sobriety check point. Does our system really make any sense?
But I am absolutely inflexible about never speeding in neighborhoods, not ever, and not even a little bit. If it says 25, I'm going 25, and the guy behind me can tailgate and honk to his heart's content. The risk of some little kid darting out, or something else unexpected happening, is just too high. Two nights ago, driving home in the dark on the little roads in my neighborhood, twice I was barely able to see people who were out for a stroll, wearing dark clothing. If I had been careening around the turns at 10-15 mph over the speed limit, I could have easily hit and seriously injured one of them. Which, penalty-wise, should be a whole different ball of wax from, say, doing 65 on an empty Route 100 at 11:30 p.m. on a weeknight.

Yeah, I've always been bothered by this logical inconsistency. I will freely admit to busting the speed limits on interstates and limited access highways on a pretty regular basis...

Intermixing standards for limited access highways with residential and other streets where pedestrians and bicyclists are present has never been good for society.

Come on folks, we all ride our bikes anyway. Many of us wear LS yellow bracelets too. Almosts everyone knows, or has had someone they know or love affected by cancer. Whether we raise any money for cancer research or not, we can certainly call attention to the research effort by doing this ride, and even telling our friends and facebook friends who ride about this web site and the ride.
Its actually pretty cool to get it in the mail, plan your ride, put it on and do a ride for someone you know, knew, or loved who had cancer. To read about the other entries in the little log book, write your own entry dedicating your ride, and then mail it on to the next person. Whether or not it sounds corny, cancer and bikes is a binding tie that we all have in common and it's really a cool feeling to do this.
So sign up if you can. Do your ride, dedicate it to someone, or not. Take a pic of you with the bracelet, and mail it on to the next person. Then watch this thread, and the facebook page as people post their pictures of their rides, and the bracelet makes its way around the country.
So that's my soapbox for the day.

Bikes for charity
Hey MD gang- I'm real big on going the speed limit through residential neighborhoods, people fly down my street and it makes my blood boil!
On to more positive human traits. I've got a few bikes that I am looking to get rid of. I am offering all of them up for donations. I'm doing two charity rides, to date, and the money can be donated to either. So the price of the bike is not really a full price as you get a tax break-and you're doing something good.
Bianchi Pista (56cm)-$450.00 donation
Trek 520-(24")$400.00 donation
Cannondale Super V 1000 (large)-$600.00 donation
Send me a private message and I'll send more pics and info

You don't see Md on my profile because I was able to escape. Although, practically my entire family still resides in Maryland; primarily around the beltway, but also on the eastern shore. Me I don't want anything to do, other than visits, with that state. Too much taxes.

Yeah, I've always been bothered by this logical inconsistency. I will freely admit to busting the speed limits on interstates and limited access highways on a pretty regular basis (although I'm never doing 100 and weaving in and out of lanes of heavy traffic.) And I would not for one second whine about it if I got pulled over -- that self-righteous "But I was just keeping up with traffic!" or "But he was going slower than me //ahem, but still above the speed limit// in the left lane!" crap cuts no ice with me. At all.
But I am absolutely inflexible about never speeding in neighborhoods, not ever, and not even a little bit. If it says 25, I'm going 25, and the guy behind me can tailgate and honk to his heart's content. The risk of some little kid darting out, or something else unexpected happening, is just too high. Here in Fl they are trying to pass a law which would allow LEO to ticket drivers that clog the roads by driving in the "fast/passing lane", even if they are driving at the speed limit. The last time they passed this Gov. Jeb Bush vetoed it because he said it punishes law-abiding drivers, which it does. But now we have a new Gov, so they're trying it again.
It's been my observation that you're safer going the speed of the traffic (on the major roadways) than going the speedlimit. Even the cops openly speed. But it's one of my pet peeves not to speed around towns/neighborhoods, regardless of who I'm pissing off.
BTW, I have pissed off cops before that was stuck behind me doing the speedlimit on residential roads...that's some sorry sh*t. It was also in Oxon hill, Md.

I for one am for higher taxes, and that's coming form a guy who's writing about 40K in checks this week. What I don't like is what it sometimes spent on, Tomahawk missiles etc. My Maryland tax bill? Doesn't even register.

Only had an early morning class yesterday and took the day to ride down to annapolis for a late lunch, attached is my ride down, forgot to restart it after lunch for the return trip
https://www.mapmyride.com/workout/42792068/
Here is a picture of the ranger station on the B&A trail, was taped off with caution tape and looks like they have spruced it up quite a bit this year.
Picture of the state house, rode a few laps around it... funny thing is looking at all the parking signs on the road... instead of the "no parking betweek 3:00 and 5:00 type signs it just says reserved for state delegate or what not
Had lunch at the federal house, they have dog bowls on the tables that they fill up for your four legged friend... I thought this was kinda gross haha but the cuban sandwhich was awesome
here is a shot of some of the store fronts downtown
overall awesome ride of the bwi trail and B&A trail, havent made the trip since last year

nice
Annapolis is a really beautiful town-but too many F----G! cars! They are the dominant feature of most urban and suburban landscapes, but we are conditioned to see that as normal.

I wonder if it is closed due to budget problems. Lots of roadside rest stops have closed due to $$. Sidling Hill rest stop on I-70 is closed and that one is heavily used.

I'll take MD taxes over FLA drivers and "culture" any day. Beautiful there, the gulf, the keys, but M and I have always referred to it as HOT Jersey. As all my old friends in NJ now live in FLA.

Definitely NOT giving up touring. Once I clear these out I will begin shopping for an all around RANDO bike. The Trek never really fit right, bit small, same with the Pista. The Mt bike? I just never rie anymore bought it 12 or so years ago for an ungodly sum. Keeping all my Arkel bags etc.

Yeah I'm not sure if the ranger house was closed due to funding, it looked like it had a new paint job. There was also a ton of trail maintenance goin of the further south I got.
At one point a cop car was driving down the path, other than scaring the sh*t out of me and having to ride on the grass abruptly. It was good to see them out patrolling

For new bikes?
Ideally I would get custom, but lots of dough and time. I would go for stock, just want a good fit. I have some hip and back issues, probably doesn't help to be on a wrong sized bike.
Also like the cyclocross idea, but that's down the road.
Any suggestions on moderately priced rando frames. I think I would like to do the build.

quick list:
of course my #1 choice would be COHO because of build quality and price. (bought that frame set for $1250), but that suggestion doesn't do you any good cause Charles quit making bikes.
stock framesets: (steel)
soma
salsa
gunnar
co-motion
independent fabrications
(Ti/carbon)
marinoni
seven
custom builds:
bilenky
richard sachs
bruce gordon
tons more names if you look at the NAHBS website

I for one am for a benign dictator in place of our current system of govt. as long as they all promise (prior to taking control) to not allow their power to corrupt them.
