(1) Paul WGR Donaldson is leading "THE HORNETS NEST HUNDRED," starting
from Monocacy Middle School, Frederick, Maryland. MEETING TIME 7:30
a.m. This ride was originally designed as the second in a series of
check-out rides for the epic "Perimeter of Frederick County," and it
remains one of our favorite rides. The first half of the ride includes
a few MAJOR climbs (and LOTS of not-so-major ones), stunning views and
magnificent scenery, featuring a delightful stretch along Friends Creek.
You can thank WGR personally for the fact that we added his favorite
climb up Frosttown Road to the route last year! The second half of the
ride is generally rolling--and still very scenic. You never know WHAT
you might see on Bollinger Road, so keep your eyes and ears open! The
route joins the northern perimeter of Frederick County about 23 miles
into the ride, near Myersville, and follows the perimeter (with a few
slight deviations made for aesthetic purposes) for the next 55-60 miles,
to the quaint village of Detour. Then it cuts back through the center
of the county to return to Frederick.
101 miles, with several short options. Estimated elevation gain 8000
feet. Note that over 5,000 feet of the total climbing will take place
in the first 50 miles.
Directions to the ride start:
MONOCACY MIDDLE SCHOOL, FREDERICK, MARYLAND, 8009 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick MD.
From D.C. Beltway, take I-270 north 31 miles to Frederick. Continue
north on US15 3.7 miles. Take Motter Ave exit (sign for Frederick
Community College). Turn RIGHT at the traffic light onto Opossumtown
Pike. In about 1.5 mi. turn RIGHT into Monocacy Middle School parking
lot (just after Frederick Community College on the left).

Missed it
GB-I got a late start and showed up at the conservatory at 10:18, at least that's what my HRM said. I didn't really expect to get there in time but was hopeful I could and get a few miles in with the group. I just rolled around Druid Hill for a while then headed over to Montebello. Ended with 50 miles but no Ilchester of course. Great weather, hope it was a great ride, good turnout?

We had myself, Barry and a very nice guy from Montgomery co. named Tim. Tim was saying that the ride interested him exactly because it was a city-county ride. Gave me some encouragement to lead some more rides out of B'more.
We stayed pretty close together for most of the whole ride. Ilchester was wet and a little greasy and I spun out twice on the steep initial section and resigned myself to walking up that part. Tim tore up the hill. Barry climbed steady and strong as usual, then we regrouped at the top.
Weather was beautiful. When we got within sight of the city, I started pushing the pace. Tim stayed close. The last stretch up Calvert from the harbor is always a challenge- if you can maintain 20+ up the hill you can get the green lights all the way up to Charles Village. Ouch.
Good riding. Sorry we missed you Harry. Alas, next time.

GB, just to let you know I got home OK. I hit every single light on Annapolis Rd and lost sight of you two. I skipped the GFT and just headed up Warner in hopes of catching you, so ether you were waiting on the trail out of sight or I really was not making up much ground. I was averaging 15.7mph right after Ilchester but that knocked some of the stuffing out of me so for me the over all average was 15.1mph. But overall I thought it was a good fun ride and hit a road I never road on before, so that's always fun.

What is it with Maryland road crews? Why can't they post adequate warning about road surface irregularities?
This morning, at approximately 6:20am, I was travelling on Taylor Avenue heading toward Perring Parkway--my normal bike commute route to work. Monday through Thursday's commute went by without any problems. Friday was shaping up to be the same. I'm about 10 minutes away from work.
The road is downhill approaching Perring Parkway. I was exceeding 20 MPH as I approached the intersection, positioned in the drops of my handlebars, accelerating because I see that the traffic control light is in my favor. I enter the intersection. My attention is on what other road users are doing around me. I didn't see any warning signs about road surface irregularities, only orange barrels. Then, I realize there's a 1-2 inch square-cut elevation in the road surface. I hit it dead on, full force. I hear my water bottle skitter across the road behind me. Something gives. It's my handlebar. The left handlebar drop breaks away, but the handlebar tape keeps my weight from shifting off center too much. I quickly grab the tops of the handlebars and slow down using the rear brake expecting one or both of my tires to go flat. I managed to shift the front deraileur to the small ring. I keep on going. I'm forced to use the rear break for stopping as all
controls on the left have nothing to brace against. Another mile up the road, I realize that my front wheel is out of true and my rear tire is going flat.
By approximately 6:35am, I get to work. I'm livid about the damage done to my bike and having to take time off from work to get it repaired all because Maryland road crews can not post adequate warning for all road users. Why is that? I could very well have gone down in the middle of Perring Parkway, acquiring major road rash, and braking bones.
I hope there is someone out there, who reads this listserv and can do something about this situation. This is not the first time that unmarked road surface irregularities have been written about here.

You're a lucky guy not havinggone down when the bar broke-though I too would be livid about the bike damage. I say e-mail your congressman. We have a long way to go with making bikes a consideration in this culture. In that part of town particularly you are quite a minority in that you bike commute. The city as opposed to the county seems to be making strides as I witnessed on my city jaunt yesterday. Still, bikes are simply an annoyance to motorists and I doubt the road crews gave any thought to a cyclist having issue with their cut out.
Barry-Is there a bike symposium scheduled for 09? We had a paltry turnout last year, perhaps this year we can get a mob to head down the B&A this time. If we plan ahead maybe people can get the day off. I was very lonely last year.

When I see road construction barrels ahead, I slow down. Am I doing something wrong or should I start accelerating at them in the future?

The symposium should be the first Wednesday in February. Irregardless of what One Less Car does I would love to do a bike ride out to Annapolis ether at the beginning or end of the legislative season on a Saturday to get a crowd out.

speakig of major rides, the second monthly "FROM DUNDALK,MD TO SOMEWHERE 50 MILES AWAY AND BACK" is next sunday @ 630am, meets @ the golds gym parking lot on Merrit Blvd.
Unsupported, as many rest stops as you need, the wife in the SAG mobile is only 1 call away!

Wife doesn't want me riding through the city, so change of plans here, I' thinking part at the park and ride on 166/195 then work over to frederick rd and take it all the way to frederick should be about 100 miles total, any takers? or just me? early start as I have to be back at the PNR by 230pm (perfer 1pm due to ravens gave but 230pm is ok too)
Great ride idea. Wish I could go tomorrow. If you're interested in postponing till 10/26, I'd ride to Fred rd. and meet you for the remainder. But alas, I've got stuff happening tomorrow and next sunday.

I really really wanted to do frederick rd becasue of the huge hill going into and out of ellicot city, probally my longest sustanied climbing. Frederick Rd there is no flat ground, just up and down hills.
I have no clue how I got a 16.5 avg, everytime I look down I was going 10mph.
Mr Brown we might have to do that on the 26th, as long as its a sunday I'm a go.

I feel like such a slacker seeing the miles put up here, No Racers, 200+ weekend. I unfortunately had to spend both days doing some badly needed house jobs and shuttling my three kids around. I did a little running and cycling around Montebello on Friday but now I'm buried with work. For 08 I think I did five or six 100+ days and some pretty close 90+ up in Quebec.

5000 miles is definitely slack, unless you do it all at or above your lactate threshold (or FTP for you power meter nerds).
