I'm going to try and do the pub ride. The Sunday guys that I ride with may be doing a ride down on the Mt. Vernon trail in DC. I would however like to meet some of you forum folks.

Didn't do Old Rag. My youngest is four and I carry him on my shoulders a bit, so we keep distances short and elevations reasonable. I carried him a good way up from Dark Hollows Falls, good workout. Enough non bike talk.

Yah, not sure how I would do without the sleep, though I would like to do PBP in 2011. I haven't done a 200 k yet so I'll start with that. I read about these guys that set track records, like five days without sleep at avh 21 mph. Last month's Bicycling had a guy who set the indoor stationary bike record, a whole week on the bike without sleep

NoRacer's ride to OC is a 300K. 13hrs at 14.4 ave (his rate)
400K could be ridden in 20hrs. (14mph ave with 45min rest/100k)
600k would be if NoRacer ate a few pizzas in OC, got a few hours sleep and then headed home.

I guess any of this stuff can be completed in 5hrs/100k. Harry, I'm in for PBP 2011

Five hours? I'm talking five days, I could never do it. Check out AdventureCorps.com, they run the Furnace Creek 508, that's 508 miles in the desert. I did their camp last year, part anyway as I had the flu and was just not up to consecutive grueling days, but the riding I did do was beautiful. They also do two centuries and double centuries every year out there in Death Valley. I think I do more web surfing about all this stuff than actually seriously thinking about doing it. The Adirondack 540 might be in my future if I can get my ass on the saddle a bit more. That's a RAMM qualifying event.
Might have to do a bit of brew pub training tonight as well. Okay, so PBP 2011 is on the calendar.

And, that was with ~20 pounds of pack on my back! Thanks to my teammate, Mark who happened to be visiting OC and who relieved me of that backpack, I was able to do ~17 mph on the way home.

All of this talk about long distance cycling makes me remember back a few years when I road the C&O in a day. I too had dreams of the PBP. Well that ride ended those dreams. I was one hurting old man. most of the pain were minor irritations that slowly grew larger, further into the ride. The 2 biggest problems were my neck and stomach. I, like Josh, ate a lot of cliff bars and gu in the second half of the ride. Major mistake. I ate well for the first half of the ride and felt great. My neck was so friggin sore I could barely hold it up near the end. My legs felt great through the entire ride. I can't imagine riding 300-400 miles let alone 1200 I believe many of the ultra long distance riders sleep in ditches for an hour or 2 when they can.

NR: Didn't see you on the W.MD. trail. I did see a few tandems. What time were y'all riding. I didn't make it to the eastern end of it though. Rode the other end.

Time?-I think you said Druid Park Conservatory.

Janet Goldstein has a ride on Saturday that looks good, though not sure I would be able to disappear both days. That Chesapeake Beach run is beautiful.

I'm planning on being there. It's just a matter of whether I'll be riding to the zoo or driving. If I drive, I'll have to go all of the way back--riding I could leave from the Fells Point area instead.

I have always like riding Keswick from Wyman park to Wyndhurst.
I would connect Dukeland to Druid Park via Liberty. I know it sucks but it's short and the only way.

Barry, I downloaded the current map. What is it that they want? Roads that I travel? Roads that I am comfortable on? Roads that I feel safe on?

There seem to be many roads that I have no problem riding on (i.e., Lombard St and Pratt St west of Patterson Park, Patterson Park Ave to Eastern Ave following Eastern Ave all of the way into Essex, Dundalk Ave, Odonnell St, etc.)

There are many roads that I ride on that an inexperienced cyclists will not feel comfortable or safe on. So, who is the "target audience" for this map?

I think the best term for what we are looking for is "routes commonly used by bicyclists" or possibly routes that are better then the surrounding roads. Ideally we want a network of roads that a moderately experienced bicyclists will feel comfortable on most of the time.

Edit:Occasional "incentive" training areas that can't be helped are allowed.

Hey, guys, sorry, work has been eating me alive lately. I'm going to have to go with an abbreviated version -- I'll ride out to Ellicott Mills to meet up with everyone there, and then to Charlie's, and then I'll have to head home.

It's possible that I won't be able to make even that short ride. If I'm not there, have a beer or three for me.

Glad you like. I'm not too worried about crime. The only bad things I try to avoid are the following (when riding the city and environs):

* Strip malls -- because people doing errands get into a "trance-like" state and aren't looking for cyclists as they weave into and out of parking lots.

* High speed traffic will very little room: Places like Patapsco ave, parts of rt40 near city, route 1 just south of city.

* Neighborhoods with lots of "unsupervised" children.

* Places that are a little too desolate. For example, I think its much safer to go through the main drag of westport (annapolis rd) than to take the trail which turns off behind the garbage burning building.


Other than that, I think that time of day is an important consideration. Friday afternoon and evening is probably the worst possible time to be out riding. One of the two times I've been hit by a car was a Friday evening-- "gently" side swiped by hit-and-run (no damage).

Very useful map, it gives me some ideas for new routes (I am not too familiar with NW Baltimore).

I would consider adding Old Harford Road. It is an easy residential road that forks off from Harford road and goes all the way past 695 and joppa to Cub Hill rd and ultimately access to loch raven.

Oakleigh is also useful. Although maybe Laurelton is better (haven't tried it).
