NYC - GW Bridge

The signs probably been up for weeks - but didn't notice it until just yesterday: Southern walkway is going to be closed beginning today thru June 2nd.

Sucks...hate the stairs on the North walkway

I want to know if they are closing it because work is being done on or around the path, or if they are using the path as a storage area.

The MTA has had the north side bike path on the Manhattan Bridge closed for almost a year now, but I cross that bridge every day on the subway and have yet to see any work being done there. At least the south side ped/bike lane isn't so bad there.

Man, again?! Wasn't it closed most of last summer?

Checked the Port Authority site:

"The south sidewalk will be closed and the north sidewalk will operate in its place from Monday, April 2, 2007 until approximately Monday, June 2, 2007. This operational change is needed to allow for construction that will improve the safety and security of the bridge.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation."

I think the GWB does actually have work done. Unfortunately the best time for them to do the work is the best time to bike.

I also wonder about the closing of the Manhattan Bridge. I think it may be for access reasons, to bring equipment up, but I haven't seen anything.

I had a dream that the Manhattan-side south ramp is replaced by a wider, straight ramp with no hairpin turns. That, and a MUP down to Palisades Interstate Park. I woke up shortly after that.

When I drove over GWB yesterday during business hours I didn't see any signs of work on the south path.

When I drove back to the city Monday it looked like they were working on the railing where the ramp hits the pathway on the NY side of the bridge, but there were no workers in sight, possibly because of the cold weather. I hope this doesn't last the whole summer. Last year it wasn't reopened until the MS ride in October.
