North County Trail

Does anyone know how to get to the North County Trail in westchester by local roads. Particularly coming from White Plains train station? I'd prefer to ride over to the beginning rather than drive/park and ride. I know there's a parking lot off the Saw Mill Parkway, but obviously I can't ride there hehe:D

If you're actually taking the train up from the city or somewhere, I suggest going to the North White Plains station instead. From there, you can hop on the Bronx River Pathway (another MUP) going north, until you hit Virginia Road (not far, perhaps 1KM from the station), and make a Left on Virginia. You'll pass a gas station on your right and start up a hill, then merge with Route 100/Grasslands Road. You'll come to an intersection where Route 100 goes right - you want to stay straight, which is Route 100C (and still Grasslands Road). You'll cross over the Sprain Brook Pkwy. At the end of Grasslands Road you'll come to a T, and you make a right on to Saw Mill Road. You'll go through a large office complex. Then you'll go under the Saw Mill River Pkwy, and a little bit after that, on your right, is the North County Trailway. It's not the very beginning, but it's close - so, you'll want to head north on it from here.

If you don't know the area this probably sounds a bit complicated - If I have time later I'll map it out on google maps or routeslip or something.

If you like a nice hill ride to start, Tarrytown might be closer. The bike path can be picked up at Saw Mill Rd, just past the Tarrytown Reservoir,

Ah, yes. A google map pointing to where these spots are would be helpful. I actually live right outside of white plains in greenburgh. I commute into white plains on most days on my bike via RT119. I just figured white plains station would be a well known starting point. I have a general idea of where you're directing me slynkie thx.

Torps, since you're coming into white plains via 119, you might be better off cutting up to route 100C from somewhere along your route, rather than starting up Virginia Road/Grasslands as I was suggesting. My way has a somewhat annoying hill at the beginning - there may be a way to circumvent it coming from 119. I don't know how ridable 9A (Saw Mill River Road) is, but that goes from 119 north to 100C, and then you're very close to the entrance to the North County Trailway.

Anyway, here's the route I was originally talking about, from the North White Plains station, following the Bronx River Pathway up to Virginia Road -

But if you zoom out a bit, you can see that 119 parallels the route, so you could potentially cut from 119 to 100/100C on either 9A, 100A or 100.

good luck!

Thanks a lot.. 9a would be ideal, but that road is a mess to ride on. Probably would need 3 extra tubes. I think 100A is okay, but that's one crazy uphill from 119. :-P

ahh, too bad about 9A.

i should also mention, i haven't actually ridden the route i'm suggesting, i've only driven it. the hill up virginia road + grasslands seems pretty long, but i'm sorta a hill-wuss so far (working on it). so, if you do have a car, you might wanna drive it first to scout it out?..
