DC area metric century/picnic

This is something that Jessica and I have been planning ever since we moved into the new place, but I need to get it advertised so we can gauge interest and give people enough time to plan.

The idea is to plan a ride of 60-65 miles, which will start and end at our house, in Poolesville, MD, and then have a post-ride picnic/BBQ in our back yard. We have a pretty serious outdoor propane grill, and I'm thinking that if everyone brought something small to grill, we could cook it up after the ride and have more than enough for everyone.

We also have a hot tub that could fit 4-6 people at a time, so there would be an opportunity for a post-ride soak. We also have a garage big enough to stash all the bikes in at the end of the ride to prevent theft, even though this is an extremely safe area.

So the questions are:

1) Who would be interested in doing something like this?
2) What would be a good date (preferably sometime in late August or early Sept)?

The actual ride I have in mind is a 60-miler, although we'd likely be over 60 because when I measured it, it I started from a point on the loop itself, and not from the house, so figure 65-ish. This loop has around 3000' of climbing, but there are only 3 climbs of any consequence.

If that's a bit much for you, there is also a 45-50 mile version that cuts off around 1000' of climbing, and several other versions are possible. I'll make cue sheets depending on what routes people are interested in. Since I'm in rough shape this year, I'll probably be riding sweep, so I'll definitely be doing sheets for the fast people.

Hopefully enough people will be interested enough to make it happen.

If it works in the schedule, I'd love to. I'd likely ride from home (Old Town), so mine would be close to a full century. I could probably get 1-2 others.

What about support? Pace? Route marking etc.? Do you see this as a group ride at a fixed pace?

Just curious -- that's a long ride to be not going at the pace that's comfy, and folks fitness and bikes will vary.

Guess we'll have to feel it out as people express interest. I've ridden this route with several people from BF, but we were all fairly close in pace. Close enough to stop every once in a while to regroup.

I would be interested in this but the later the better. I still have 4 weeks until I am allowed to ride on the road again.

I'm interested but I'm doing a couple of local (so MD) centuries on Sept 1 and Sept 22.

Riskus, where do you ride? I live in Kingstowne

You know we're in - name the date, though I've got a couple of upcoming centuries planned. Your old favorite - Bay Country - is 9/1 & the Civil War is 9/8.

How about we pick up some food on the way? We pass llamas, cows, turkey vultures and plenty of road kill....

Definitely. I have been wanting to try out your loops for awhile. I would prefer probably later in september. It will give me more time to get back in shape. I was having a good first part of the year but really lousy since May. My last time on the bike was June 17.

I am all for having it later...we haven't done anything longer than 20 miles this year, (a terrible cycling year, too much going on!) so we need some time to train! O_O

Riscus, why can't you ride on the road?

i'm definitely interested. The way my life works right now, I wouldn't be able to definitely sign on until maybe the week beforehand.

I think I may have posted this before, but this should give those who are unfamiliar with the route an idea of the pace:

Hey - I remember that picture. I think I took it just as Jess was jumping into hyperspace.

Hmm... potentially interested (though August would be *much* better than September), though I fear I'd have trouble keeping up w/the group.

Depending on the number of people coming and different riding levels, we may be splitting the group up into different abilities.

Ok, so our options are:

August 25th - 1 week after the Lancaster ride.
September 1 is over the Labor Day weekend, so people will likely already have plans.
September 8th.

Those are just suggestions. Do they work for any of us?
