2008 North Fork Century

My G/F and I will be riding in the North Fork Century on August 24th. We will most likely be doing the 66 mile route.

Who's in?

That sounds like a cool ride...starts and ends in Greenport, and we can go fishing there too!

Would love to do it, but I won't be in town. Save me a cue sheet, please?

the best part steve.. we can drive an park an when we are done.. just go back to the car an leave.. no worries about the sepperation time from the bikes...

HarmonicD 07-02-08 08:54 PM

I'm probably going to do the 100 for this one. Never did any riding on the north fork of LI before.

Stacy 07-02-08 10:02 PM

This is a nice ride. I managed to get in the first 40 miles before the weather got the better of me two years ago. Small hills , great scenery, Long Island wine country. Glenn bases it out of Greenport High School so there are real showers instead of those portable things he uses for Montauk.

Oh yeah, and when it rained, Glenn and the volunteers were nice enough to move our bags to a dry location :p

I like this...Anthony won't have to piece it back together after a bad transport. Part of me wants to see if we can crash at my old stomping grounds on Shelter Island. What time is the last ferry from Greenport?

Look us up when you get there; Henri will be the one riding a paceline that's 4 mph ahead of anyone else :p that is until I catch him with a random burst of speed :D

Thanks for the [shower] heads up, Stacy. I actually was just happy to have any shower at all after the Montauk ride. I haven't been to Greenport in 20 years; trying to remember where the H.S. is. I do remember where the Shelter Island Ferry is, though. I spent many a time driving like mad to make the last ferry...are you planning on this ride?

I haven't made up my mind yet. I spend a lot of money in the past few weeks and I don't want to wind up fueling my ride with ramen :p

Stacy,
You seem to have good info on different rides.
Have you ever done the Gold Coast in Long Island?

Thanks! I'm not sure if I can keep up just yet. I'm still relatively new to biking as this is my first full season of riding.

No I've only read about it on the web. According to the site it's accessible via the LIRR which is a real plus for us city slickers :p

Frankie, I did this tour in 1993 with some friends and the 55 mile route (which they had at the time) was challenging but do-able for me at that time. I tried again in 1994 and could only manage about ten miles before I finally left my bike with a homeowner and took a taxi back to the car.

The hills were very intense (for me) and I never went back for another try. Now that I am back into the biking thing, I may try to complete this ride again (since it is one of only two rides that I quit in the middle of) but I wont be doing it this year since I am registered for several other rides already.

FrankieV 07-04-08 05:15 AM

Thanks Matty,
Congrats on finishing the Montauk ride.

I really enjoyed the Harbor's Ride last weekend in the same area.
I may give the Gold Coast a shot next weekend.

Have a good 4th!

Lucky07 07-04-08 06:09 AM

Hmm. Not sure I'll be in town and/or if I want to hand Glen more $ this soon. Definitely doing the Harlem Valley 100 route.

FrankieV 07-04-08 07:56 AM

Didn't know it was Glen's ride, but it's a cheapie...$20 or $25 day of ride.
I'll do either the Gold Coast or Harlem Valley.
Harlem valley kicked my a** last year.
I may go back to see how I fare this time around.

I think Lucky07 meant the Northfork Century, which is one of Glenn's rides. Current cost is just about $100 including transportation from Manhattan.. a bit cheaper if you can get there on your own.

Between getting caught in a thunder storm two years ago, and reading about what happened with the Montauk rides, I also have doubts about spending $100 or more, in advance, for any of these rides.

Good luck if you do the Gold Coast Tour, I found it to be difficult when I tried it 14 years ago.

I am registered for the Harlem Valley ride and the North Fork ride. Will be doing both with my G/F so will only be doing the sixty-somthing mile option in both rides. Maybe I will see you on one of these rides (or both).

Hopefully we'll meet up.
Is the North Fork fairly flat?
I've done 75 miles of rolling hils but never 100 of any type of terrain.
If it's flat I'll make this my first.

Stacy 07-05-08 07:14 PM

Definitely NOT flat but not bad either. Sorta like Queens hills or even like the hills in Central Park.

From the website:

The route is flat, Flat, FLAT... no hills at all on the 25- or 66-mile routes; three short but nasty hills on the 100-mile route. (But nothing you would write home about...)
