Hey NJ I need your help

Im going to cut to the chase...A friend said if I ride from ny to his house he would buy a bike and start riding. So I hopped on google map and this is the route it came up with:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...w&ie=UTF8&z=10

question is there any roads I should avoid or should i avoid this attempt all together?

This would pretty much be suicide. The Lincoln Tunnel and Route 78 don't allow bikes, and I wouldn't ride on route 1 if you paid me.

However, if you can get your friend to take up cycling, finding a way to do this would be awesome. I see a few options:

You could take the PATH to Newark and then ride from there. Newark is dicey, but possible. (I've never ridden more than a few blocks from Newark Penn while waiting for a connecting train.)

The map shows that there's a ferry into Liberty State Park from Ellis and Liberty islands. You could do that, but how does one bike across Newark Bay? The only crossings are the Pulaski Skyway, US 1&9 truck, and the Turnpike. There's Route 7, the Jersey City Turnpike; anyone now if this is bikeable? This area is dangerous in general, a nest of highways and cloverleaf intersections.

An option you might consider: Take the train to Princeton Junction and then ride to your friend's house from there. It's about the same distance, and a lot prettier.

If you absolutely need to ride all the way from your house, you can head uptown and take the George into NJ. The GWB is the only legal crossing for bikes at the moment. Even though Bergen County is very tough to plot a good routes in, this can be and is done. Maybe 60-70 miles for this one? This might be the safest route, even though it is much longer.

If you do this, post pictures!

yea i think the only way to cross the newark bay is through the 1&9 truck route, is that stretch really that bad? if thats the only stretch that id have to worry about then i might just tough it out...and its not that important that i start from my house but i want to show that its possible to commute that sortof distance with a bicycle, so i might take the path to the exchange place and start from there. the gwb route is like 100+ miles haha im not ready to do my first century yet, atleast thats not what im trying to achieve here. wanna take a crack at the estimated time for this route?

Take the ferry to Staten Island and take the Bayonne Bridge. Adjust your route from there and avoid the big roads. Here is what I got from my gps routing program.

Hwy440
Get on Innis St and drive east
Turn right onto Nicholas Ave
Turn right onto Hooker Pl
Turn right onto Trantor Pl
Take the Rt-440 N ramp to the left towards Bayonne Br
Turn left onto E 22nd St
Turn right onto Jf Kennedy Blvd
Turn left onto Danforth Ave
Turn right onto Hwy 440 N
Turn right onto Virginia Ave
Turn left onto Hwy 440 S
659Hwy
Get on Hwy 440 S and drive southwest
Perform a U-Turn back onto Hwy 440 N
Turn left onto US-1-Truck S/US-9-Truck S towards Kearny/New Jersey Turnpike/Newark
Keep left onto Road
Keep left onto Springfield Ave
Keep left onto Cr-5
Keep left onto Broad St
Turn right onto Springfield Ave
Turn right onto Valley Rd
Turn left onto Valley Rd
Turn left onto Church St
Turn left onto US 202
Turn right onto Peapack Rd
Turn right onto Prospect St
Far Hills

It does put you on 1/9 for a 1/2 mile, but there might be some way to avoid that. About 42 miles from the Bayonne Bridge. You might want to try driving it first to see what the roads are like.
