Took the Rawland on a quick sprint around the Mystic Lakes this morning. That, and three cups of coffee, cleared the cobwebs out.

Rolled out again before dinner, up the Minuteman to Lexington Center and back. I was looking to see if the abandoned elliptical machine was still sitting trailside, but somebody had made off with it already.

No juice in the phone, won't take a charge. While I may have a fix for that tomorrow, in the meantime life is strangely peaceful, just the land line and the laptop for distraction, and neither of those fits in my pocket.

Thanks to a rare episode of sleeping in, I found myself riding the Surly out to Depot Park and back at noon. Noon on a weekday is not a bad time to be on the Minuteman, and I kept a good pace; the fact that the phone was still an inert hockey puck didn't hurt either, more pedaling, less stopping to compose photos. And the weather was beautiful for riding.

Just after the turnaround, I was passed by a kid on what I took to be a mountain bike, but which may have been a gravel bike (CF, maybe 2" tires, whazzat?). He started doing wheelies, interspersed with the occasional bunny hop. As I came up to speed and passed him, I said, "Nice wheelies", and was treated to wheelies in my rear-view mirror for as long as he remained in my line of sight.

The one-wheel theme was continued near the Route 128 overpass, when a convoy of electric unicyclists rolled past outbound. They were happy, I was happy, and nobody was on a kamikaze mission.

Near the Westview Street crossing, I encountered two South Asian gentleman out for a walk. Indicating a large patch of what looked to me like wood ears, one said, "Mushrooms." The the other asked, "Do you know them?" Never eat a mushroom to which you have not been properly introduced.

Tuesday morning I excitedly rode my Seven Redsky for 24.8 miles, a variation of my quintessential loop out to Concord and back. Wednesday I extended that to 28 miles by adding Strawberry Hill rd to the route. Rain wasn’t forecasted so I was on my Redsky again, it rained😩.

Especially with my 4 day 3 night CC tour I have for this weekend. I’ll be back on my 520 with my small Ortliebs. Friday I’m riding to Plymouth, Saturday to Yarmouth. I’ll stay there with the wife and kids at a beachfront resort until I leave Monday morning. From Yarmouth I’ll head to Ptown where I’ll take the fast ferry to Boston where I’ll ride home from. We’re combining a mini tour with a Family weekend at the beach.

That sounds like a great end-of-summer tour! Enjoy!

Took the Rawland clockwise around the Battle Green in the mid-afternoon Thursday. Phoneless again, and only found myself reaching for it a couple of times, gradually relaxing out of the photographic reflex, using my eyes and brain for something other than composing likely shots, for example, dodging traffic, of which there was an abundant supply. My hands kept busy with the handlebars, bar-end shifters, and especially the bell. After crossing the Lexington-Arlington line returning, I lost track of the Appleton Street intersection, convinced that I had passed it without noticing and marveling at my apparent desensitization after the recent fatal incident, and then put it aside; in a few minutes, I found myself zooming down-hill towards the Appleton Street intersection, and felt like I was stuck in one of those temporal loop scenes in an old Doctor Who episode. A few minutes more, and I missed noticing a deep pot hole in shadow East of Arlington Center, rode right through it with a jarring impact but restored my line instinctively, with the bike doing most of the work, and thought to myself, "Tyler Oulton built the wheels on this bike. He just saved my bacon from beyond the grave. Thank you, Tyler!"

Sprinted around the Mystic Lakes on the Surly Friday morning, the ride composed of pedal strokes and glimpses, dwell time lengthening only for stoplights. Another phone-free ride.

Took the Surly East on Saturday, for a ride in the hills of Medford, Malden, Melrose, Stoneham, and Winchester, cranking up and whizzing down. Fun with gravity and grade. No phone, so no map, so I followed my memory, and sometimes my nose.

Just shy of 55 miles for me today. I rode up 225, and into Harvard, Bolton, Stow, Maynard, Iced coffee on the patio of West Concord DD, then back home to Billerica.

Took the Rawland for a sunset ride on the Minuteman before dinner. The outbound leg was more of a solar glare ride, once or twice blindingly so. After the turnaround, the clouds began to be washed with delicate color, and if solar glare was bothering anyone, it wasn't my East-facing self. There's no longer any point in ignoring the shrinking day. The night-riding season is coming.

Rode the Surly Trucker DeLuxe clockwise around the Battle Green after breakfast. Labor Day on Mass. Ave. was a good bet; to say I saw more bikes than cars there would be a gentle exaggeration, unless perhaps one counted the bikes queued up to get on the Minuteman, in which case there's a bit more justice to it. Still no phone, so still an emphasis on speedy, uninterrupted spin, facilitated by judicious use of the Generalized Idaho Stop (* = YIELD), which never rose quite to the level of a Baghdad Stop (* = DON'T STOP). Kept a good pace, and, together with the 3 cups of coffee at breakfast, this ride got the juices flowing.

Cary Coovert's memorial bench has been installed at the side of the Minuteman, just a little eastbound from his ghost bike.

Tuesday morning, I took the Rawland up the Minuteman and happened upon the small, intimate installation ceremony for the Cary Coovert memorial bench. These days, ceremonies are small for a reason, so I kept pedaling, but stopped to chat with a few people who were still there when I returned on the inbound leg of the ride.

Wednesday morning, took the Surly on the same route, and dodged DPW personnel and vehicles out cutting back the invasive Japanese Knotweed. Lots of resveratrol in that stuff, if anyone knew how to cook it out. Could turn the Minuteman into a revenue source for the Town.

Thursday brought two short rides on the Rawland: a 4-mile quickie riding home from Lexington Toyota, after leaving my car at their Service department, and a 6-mile loop up the Mystic Valley Parkway, up the hill on Bacon Street, Winchester, to connect with Main Street at the rotary, over the Medford line onto Winthrop Street (briefly), then down the hill on Playstead Road, alongside the Oak Grove Cemetery and on into the village of West Meford, then across the tracks to Harvard Avenue, across the Mystic River to River Street, and up the hill to home. I was flirting with clouds and rain on both rides, and seemed to have won most of the bets I had made after squinting at the weather radar.

Needed a quick ride after breakfast, got it with a loop with Mystic Valley Parkway and Main Street, Winchester, outbound, Playstead Road (Medford) and Harvard Ave. inbound, keeping a quick pace through the gray, cool morning air, the Mystic Lakes like gunmetal. This is pretty much the shortest ride I regularly do, but it's pleasant and allows for putting out as much energy as you have on hand.

Took the Surly Trucker DeLuxe East and into the hills on Saturday afternoon, cranking up and whizzing down a gamut of grades in Medford, Malden, Melrose, Stoneham, and Winchester, beginning and ending in East Arlington. My legs finally feel their tuned up for this season, just as the season is winding up, or at least cooling down. The Season of Layers is coming in fast, guess I'll have to rise to meet it.

Last Friday I woke up at 0400 without hitting the snooze button. Knowing the next 4 days were mostly filled with another cycling mini tour. My travels would take me to Plymouth, just under 60 miles according to my new Edge Touring GPS. But first I went out for 25 miles on my Allroads at 0500 because I wanted to rack up more miles after all. Instead of dressing for work afterwards I dressed in more cycling clothes and rode my lightly loaded 520 to Plymouth. Using Garmin Connects heatmapping I rode a route similar to the Clair Saltonstal route as I have always done in the past. Instead of going into Boston I went through West Newton to get to West Roxbury. Eventually I landed by the rock for a quick break as I arrived a little before check in time.

I stayed at a small 1950’s motel which was all I needed for 1 night. Mrs Ghazmh and the kids met me for dinner as they were driving to Yarmouth where I would meet them Saturday. Saturday it was only a quick 40 mile ride to Yarmouth. No riding Sunday. Monday it was a really short hop to the CCRT where I rode to the Orleans rotary to the Old Colony trail. I only rode about half of it before heading back and rejoining the CCRT.

I was merrily riding along when I heard the awful sound of awfulness that can only be one thing. It wasn’t from running over a stick, a rock or a seashell. It was a spoke breaking. My 1-ish year old hand laced 36 spoke rear wheel broke a spoke, with under 1000 miles on them. Panic set in as I bent the spoke around an adjoining spoke and tried, unsuccessfully to adjust the corresponding nipples to keep the wheel as straight as possible. At least the tire wasn’t rubbing the fender. I figured I could just open the 1990’s tech V brake arms and limp to Provincetown. I made it a few miles until the tire began rubbing on the fender, now it was due or die. I managed to adjust the corresponding nipples until it stopped rubbing. With just a front brake I made it a few more miles to a bike shop in Orleans where I stopped and asked if they could get the wheel straight enough for me to make it to Provincetown in order to get the last ferry to Boston that day. God bless them they had the correct spoke! A few minutes and 20 bucks later my tour was back on.

Hugely relieved and grateful I eventually made it to McMillan pier and took a very crowded ferry to Boston for the final 17 miles of an 80 mile day where I got into my garage as the last bit of daylight saw me safely home.

I suspected hauling the Burly full of groceries weekly up my neighborhood hill likely put excessive strain on the wheel. Otherwise I’ve not come near overloading it with very heavy panniers. I think I’ll practice wheel truing, I have an old broken wheel I can practice on.

Had a quick sprint around the Mystic Lakes on the Rawland in the late afternoon, after having spent much of the rest of the day getting a new phone (Pixel 4 XL) up and running with the old number on a new network (Google Fi); in short, there's a new devil in my pocket. The ride occasioned testing the camera, along with a new-to-me tracking app (GPS Logger) to replace the old, satisfactory, now unsupported Google MyTracks. Nice little ride at a quick pace, and the new Pocket Devil performed adequately.

I spun out to Depot Park on the Rawland, before dinner. For some reason the Minuteman and its habitués reminded me of a street scene in an R. Crumb comic, but without the Sewer Snoids. I rode along cultivating detachment, and ringing the bell as necessary to avoid karmic entanglement. Lots of kids out on their own, making things up as they go along, the way kids do. Some unusually talented skaters were dodging all comers. A few e-bike riders were rocketing along, but without giving serious affront to anyone as far as I could see. Entirely too many of the users on the Bedford segment were barefaced, and Lexington could have been better masked than it was. Arlington was all masks.

I was tired when I started, and warmed up slowly, but eventually the ride came together, and I avoided descending into monkey mind, keeping my pace and staying out of trouble.

The Blue Biking of Arlington continues, at Broadway and Grafton Street...

... and Mass. Ave. and Grafton Street...

I rode around Arlington for a few minutes after taking those pictures, seeking motivation, and found it in Medford, crossing the Mystic River four times and following Boston Ave. up the hill to Winthrop Street, then Winthrop Street back down the hill, across the Mystic and Route 16, and up the next long hill into Winchester and Main Street, down that hill, with a swift run down Bacon Street (Francis, Roger, or Hormel, do you think?) and onto the Mystic Valley Parkway, where I played with the new phone for a few minutes, photographing the sailboats that were dancing on the Upper Mystic Lake like so many waterbugs.

Note: the Hill neighborhood bordering Tufts was eerily quiet. Did the Tufts kids not get called back? Mr. Google knows, I guess, maybe I should ask him.

Nice to leave the heavy u-locks home and not to have to worry about my bike at all.

Undock, head into Davis Square, dockit and forgetit.

Eat a wonderful lunch al fresco.

Undock, return, dockit and forgetit.

Took the Rawland on a late afternoon ride up Mass. Ave. and clockwise around the Battle Green. The Sun was filtered through a milky sky, thanks to California fires and the jet stream. Glad that stuff isn't down here where our lungs are.

By the time I reached Lexington Center, the sky had taken on a mauve cast.

Watched over by Captain Parker, some kids were demonstrating on the Battle Green, eliciting honks from passing motorists. A peal of my bell seems to have pleased them just as well.

Somewhat late to the party, I had a realization about the virtue of assertive pedaling while traversing rough pavement. The little 30mm Grand Bois Cypres Extra Leger tires on the Rawland had something to teach me about that today, and I took note.

Needed a quick ride before dinner, and got it on the Rawland, sprinting around the Mystic Lakes on the usual route. I tested the hypothesis that somehow the saddle height had been set a little too tall, and that instantly cured a couple of different pains. Had some very young fool in an SUV scream an incoherent and possibly (if I heard him correctly) absurd imprecation at me on Everett Street, Winchester; without going into details, what he said was so ludicrous it was merely silly, but he seemed quite sincerely exercised about it. Oh well, many of our fellow citizens are finding themselves out of sorts for reasons that can be found in any edition of the Globe, so I guess we're going to hear about it from time to time. The fact that the stratosphere is full of particulates doesn't do anybody's mood any good; here's a picture of that, with a wan sun peeking through the haze as seen over the Upper Mystic Lake, near the mouth of the Aberjona River.

It was a good, quick, energetic ride, and got my legs, lungs, and brain straight in a jiffy.
