Metro Boston: Good ride today?

Dressed for the seasonal weather, then took the Ebisu All Purpose Bicycle and rode East.
This was yet another iteration of the hills-and-traffic drill on the roads to my immediate East, a mix of dense-suburban and paved roads through the Fells, with a short segment of the Northern Strand Community Path thrown in. The ride lasts the better part of the afternoon, and at this time of year that means it ends in darkness. It's good practice and the hills have been tuning me up. The 38mm Soma C Line tires get me through the broken and uneven pavement that is an occasional feature of the road surface (to say nothing of the railroad tracks).
The first hill climb of the ride is on High Street, rising from West Medford. I paused at the high point and took its picture. A swift descent ensued, followed by a whirl on the Winthrop Square rotary.
In Medford Center, I paused again to photograph the Ebisu All Purpose Bicycle in front of the Ebisuya Japanese Market. One good incarnation of a Shinto deity (in this case, Ebisu, the lucky fisherman) deserves another.
The rest of the photographs were taken in the evening. Cresting the big hill on Fellsway East:

That was all very well, except that the bike I was on was NOT the Ebisu All Purpose Bicycle, it was the Ocean Air Cycles Rambler. Sheesh! I guess I was tired when I wrote that ride report. Here's a photo, taken in October, of the actual Ebisu All Purpose Bicycle, for reference. It's been too long since I've ridden it, and I guess I had it in the back of my mind when I stopped at Ebisuya. No offense meant to any Shinto deity.
The Rambler and the Ebisu do have a lot of virtues in common, versatility first among them. Time to give the Ebisu a spin, I think.

fwiw - Bedford Depot restrooms still open. sign says 'till 9pm
disappointed Express Pizza, 65 Loomis St, was closed. there was a sign on the door, but I didn't go over to read it. maybe they have reduced hours or just taking some vacation time?

I've been feeling that my Fuji should get out to at least one more time before the roads get sloppy. I decided this morning would be a great time to do that. It was pretty cold (about 37 when I left the house), so I bundled up: two layers below the waist, three layers above, two skulls caps under the helmet, and heavy gloves. I was actually quite toasty.
I headed out on the MM to the Bedford Depot. It was pretty quiet - I think I could have counted all the other riders I saw on my 10 fingers. The MM was very clean. Pretty much all the leaves are blown off by now, just some patches of pine needles toward the western end.
The Christmas decorations are up at the Depot (they were already up last Saturday when I rode the Checkpoint out there):
With the decorations, the old baggage cart, and B&M RDC 6211, the scene has a very Currier and Ives quality. The green bike with its red saddle bag complements nicely.
I retraced my path on the MM back to Arlington. At the office park at Westview St (across the path from Revolution Hall) I spotted a flock of wild turkeys on the grass. They were huge - not the wiry ones I have often seen. I should have taken a picture, but I was too lazy to wrangle out of my heavy gloves and then get them back on again.
A fine brisk ride.

The headline story is of particular note: Sudbury has awarded the construction contract to extend the BFRT from the current southern terminus in Concord to (what would become) the MCRT junction. That's about 5 more miles of trail. It seems Sudbury residents have a different take on rail trails than those of Bedford...

Home improvement projects have been cutting into my riding time lately. This week, HVAC techs installed the Kraken in my basement. They said it was a heat pump. The horror...
I decided to retire the lovely, and now quite slick, Grand Bois Cypres Extra Leger tires that have graced my Rawland Nordavinden since its build, 4125 miles ago. Riding them was starting to feel like pressing my luck. Here they are, retired like me. Mere calamari compared to the Kraken in the basement, but everything to its proper scale.
The Nordavinden got a new pair of Rene Herse Stampede Pass Extralights. Battle Road Bikes did the swap, and replaced the rim strip while they were at it. Some chain stretch reared its head, and a new chain followed. Meanwhile, traffic came and went at the Dunkin Donuts next door.
A valve stem issue was resolved, and I rode a considerably freshened-up Nordavinden down the Minuteman to home.
Ominous mechanical shreiks came from the AHS construction site. Gojira?
Rain began to fall, and I went grocery shopping.

got out before the rain today. a little misting/drizzle as I got back home
saw this fun sign on the Assabet, near the S. Acton train station. I guess it means bikes can do whatever they want!
got out for a little bit last night as well. was happy to try some new tires on a trail in the woods, but I inadvertently had the camera off once I entered the woods ;-(

Sunday evening, I took the Sam Hillborne out for a sunset ride on the Minuteman.
This bike is still new to me, and I found myself appreciating the effects its very long wheelbase (longer than my old LHT, for example) has on the ride and handling. I like it. It will be interesting to see how it fits a variety of riding conditions.
The sunset was intense, but too brief.
Soon enough, I was riding the long bike in the dark on supple, 38mm tires: floating home.

I got out for my first ride of December at midday today. Arlington to Lowell Rd Concord via the MM and RBT.
It was brisk and peaceful. The RBT was wetter than it has been since Spring, but still quite dry by historical standards. Lots of trees have fallen out that way lately.
This big boy was already down, and cleared, when I rode that way on Thanksgiving weekend:
A bit further west this more recent fall required giving the bike a lift:
Took a short break at Lowell Rd:
From there I retraced my path back home via Depot Park. And now for the critical late season restroom status:
Yup, they're closed for the season. I am guessing this changed on the first of the month, as they were still open last Tuesday.
I found welcome bladder relief at the Lexington Visitor's Center. BTW, if you haven't tried it, you can get a bike in those bathrooms without too much trouble. Not as spacious as Depot Park, but it works.

had to lift over that downed log too!
took a clandestine loop around GMWR & was surprised at how dry the water crossings were!

The entrance road there has been torn up for awhile, part of the upgrades they are doing that are supposed to eventually include new restrooms. I was curious about the status of that, so I just went looking for info. On this page, https://www.fws.gov/refuge/great-meadows , I found this:
So, maybe some progress will be apparent next time we are out there.

Tuesday afternoon we were headed for a grayscale sunset. It was still too bright to be gloomy, but no pink would come of it.
I took the Rawland Nordavinden out in the silver-gray weather, cool but not cold by comparison to recent mornings. The lively frame, low-trail geometry, and supple 32mm tires danced over the pavement, particularly over the root heaves.
The Mile 4.0 Cairn Builders have rocks in their rookery, or rooks in their rockery.
