I believe the intersection we're describing is the right turn onto Sensenig road from Centerville Rd (about 26 miles in).
I can't help but wonder if the lack of media coverage means something...

I was with Bau at the time and we made a (R) turn, noticed the same thing regarding the SUV and the mangled bike and white bags. I can't seem to find anything on any of the news wires though so I'm not sure if it was just an accident or a fatality.
Any luck from anyone regarding this incident?

You may be on to something, I didn't see anything on the news last night at all which I'm hoping is a good thing. I would imagine if a cyclist was killed on that ride it would make the news in some fashion. I saw Susan Shapiro from news 8 out on the ride as well.

I really hope you're right but my cynical side is telling me that in this case no news = no fodder for lawyers.

Here's some pics:
at the start with sjauch, wolfpack and my wife

me and sjauch, early on....it was pretty cool for the first 30 km or so...then it started getting hotter pretty quickly.

sjauch passing one of the many horse-drawn buggies on the roads. the horses were all very tall and lean - not sure what breed but they looked very well cared for...much better than the poor creatures pulling carriages through heavy traffic in and around Central Park!

The ride was fun, but I kept dreaming of two things - ice cream dixie cup at the finish, followed by a massage...

dude - what you see is what we took....we took a lot more in '05 - and we thought it was hot that day!
It was just brutal heat Sunday. we didn't stop for many pics...we dragged the camera along to dinner with wolfie on Sunday night and we were all so tired we could barely lift our utensils, let alone snap a photo
I was a bit surprised that we only went through maybe 5 covered bridges at the most - I think there used to be a lot more on the route....

Every day a winding road
I would have to think that with trap, tape and all it cannot be good news. They must have had things cleaned up by the time I hit the intersection because all I saw was the fire truck. It was an aerial platform truck if I remember correctly.
Maybe a slight smaller and different version of one of these.

I really enjoyed riding with some BF'ers on the Saturday social ride and then again on Sunday's main ride.........I had a 15.2 mph average this year on Sunday, 1.5mph faster than last year....so I guess losing 38lbs actually DID help me on the climbs this year.....another 32 and I should be able to ride with Denny, Bruce, Karen, Steve and Mike and others without having them wait for me next time
Overall, it was another great covered bridges ride....a couple of more rest/water stops would've been nice with the 90 degree heat....but we managed.....

Hi all,
Sorry I didn't catch up with all of you at the start. I got to the parking lot around 6:45 and we rolled out onto the course around 7:15 probably. It was hot. We learned from last year about the 19 miles between lunch and the last rest stop so I actually brought a 3rd water bottle to fill at lunch time. I was also disappointed that there was only water at all the stops except lunch. Bananas or gatorade would have been appreciated. Of course I also learned from last year and brought my own sport beans. (You also learn to grap an extra banana or two from the start and lunch stops.)
Because I got out early I also got to the accident scene early. :-( When we went by, there was only one EMT on the scene and they didn't seem to be doing much. There was a white sheet covering something. One of us thought it was a body and one thought it was just a gurney. Within a minute of us going by we heard at least 4 other emergency responder vehicles going to the scene quickly. I didn't notice the mangled bike but if it was there it'd certainly lend some credence to the fatality rumor. I asked around after the ride but noone knew anything about the details of the accident. (or they weren't saying.)
All told, this ride is enjoyable but the support seems to be waning. I still enjoy the ice cream at the finish but with only water stops this ride isn't much different than what I could accomplish on my own. I'm guessing maybe the ride is a victim of its own success. I heard they had 3300 registered riders.

Hey...I recognize those yellow fenders! On a black Surly, yes? That was a nice looking ride. I saw you at the last water stop.
Me

Again

Early on

the first covered bridge

I like this shot

My camera battery died just about the time that I thought I was gonna have heat stroke. I stopped in the shade and dumped part of my water bottle over my head.

Cool pic zoste! For some reason I don't remember a downhill like that into a bridge.
But I disagree with you both. I though LBC did a top notch job. It is very hard to organize that many riders.
I do admit they should have not dropped that stop after lunch. It was a long ride in the heat to get to the next one.
Also I would like to have seen misters at the break stops. May have not work with so many people but it would be nice to be able to cool off a bit. There was one place were someone had their lawn sprinkler spraying out into the road. It was very refreshing to ride through that. I wonder if they did it on purpose???
Also did anyone notice the little boy selling lemonade toward the end? A very enterprising young man!
I really wanted to stop but wanted to finish too. I think my buds did not want to stop either.

what happened to the unofficial rest stop those people used to have in their front yard in years past? I didn't do the ride last year, but the 2 years prior it was the best stop on the ride.

That stop was gone last year and didn't reappear this year either. Twas a shame as that was by-far the best food on the ride.

Condolences to the man's family, friends, and loved ones. Even without knowing the details of the accident, I feel bad for the driver and witnesses as well.
Be careful out there...

indeed. I didn't think the ride was that crowded but it must be growing in numbers rapidly from what everyone is saying here and what I heard from other riders Sunday...that always causes additional safety concerns.
Careful out there folks; there but for the grace of God.......
