I'm living up in Ipswich, MA for the summer. My girlfriend lives down in Newport, RI, and I don't have a car anymore so I need a good route I can take.

For when I get into Boston I usually take 1A down through Salem then try to avoid the hellscape of Lynn, Chelsea, Peabody, etc. https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2753878 This is the route I would take going to Boston, which used some back roads around Lynn, but getting through chelsea and Somerville requires spending a lot of time on at least one or two terrible roads.

Google Maps is being useless for directions and telling me to ride route 1 for 40 miles. That's not going to happen. Anyone on here ever go down on to the island from Boston?

Try this for part of the way:
From Winter Island Campground in Salem MA., to South Station in Boston.
Take Fort Ave. .7 miles
Turn LEFT onto Essex St. and go .4 miles
Turn LEFT onto Rt. 1A, follow .3 to 1A / 114

Turn LEFT onto 114 and follow 3 miles to 129/Ocean Ave
From 114 & 129 take 129 / Atlantic Ave southwest 2.6 miles to Puritan Rd.
Turn LEFT onto Puritan Rd., skipping the park and preschool traffic in favor of a longer stretch of beach.
Follow 129/ Humphrey St. WEST another .7 miles and bear left onto Lynn Shore Drive.

Follow Lynn Shore Dr. 1 mile and you’ll come to a rotary (check out Nahant Rd. to loop to Little Nahant for a scenic ride, but a detour from getting to Boston).

Leave rotary headed Northeast on the Lynnway, witch will become Rt. 1A. This stretch is terrible but can’t be avoided completely.

Take a LEFT onto Marine Blvd. which will take a right before becoming Riley Way. Riley Way and Riley Way Ext. do not connect.
The Riley Way ext. will take a sharp Right and become Hanson St.
You can either take Hanson back to 1A & go LEFT or continue on straight on the path along the shore which will hug the water, curve right and meet 1A at the General Edwards Bridge. Take the path, 1a is nasty.

Once over the bridge, take immed. LEFT onto Rice Ave. which will hug the beach, and keep you of 1A.

At the end of Rice Ave. , take a Right onto Harrington and an immed. LEFT to get back to Revere Beach Rd.

Follow Revere Beach Blvd. South 2.7 Miles along the beach to the end, at Eliot Circle.
Food stops across from beach, toilets / water at bath houses.
Stay Straight / LEFT onto RT 145 / Winthrop Pkwy for .2 miles
Turn RIGHT onto Jones Rd. for .2
Stay straight onto Atlantic for 300’
Take 140 degree LEFT onto Unity follow 300’
To Beachmont “T” Station. Elevator to get onto the platform


At this point ,a decision needs to be made to on how to cross the river into Boston.

The “T” (blue line) to the Aquarium stop, which is not far from the South Station.
There may be a commuter train to Prov. From East Prov. take the East BAy bike path to Bristol, either ride over the Mt. Hope Bridge (scary) or Ripta bus over the bridge

Getting to boston isn't the problem, it's getting to Providence/bristol from there. and yeah riding over the Mt. Hope sucks a lot and is real scary, I'd rather pay 2 bucks to take the bus to where my girlfriend lives.

The Narragansett Bay Wheelmen have a few maps in the club library. From the Mt Hope Bridge to Newport, try this map, the bridge isn't as bad as the very first section of ropad you face when you come off of the bridge where there are four lanes and no shoulder, ditto for the section of 138. Could go the route in reverse to avoid some of it is but it is longer.

I really wish that Aquidneck island would put in a decent bike path to the north tip of the island. Both East and West main roads are incredibly dangerous for cyclists. They're what obviously were meant to be two lane highways with wide shoulders that are now four lane highways with no shoulder where everyone drives 60 miles an hour because they're all ******** tourists from New York. Last time I rode West Main someone threw a handful of change at me.

There used to be a Providence-Newport ferry run by RIPTA. If there still is, ride to Prov, and ferry to Newport. MUCH better than riding on W. or E. Main Road on the Island.

----just checked. No more ferry. You would have to take bus#60. Still, not a bad idea.

Yeah I've ridden all of West main and I think I'd take the Ripta any day over riding the Mt. Hope or that road any time soon.

And yeah CT and MA and everyone else pipes in their fair share of stupid jerks to Aquidneck...
