MBT morning rush hour. I had a little extra time and the traffic was really backed up, so I abandoned RI Ave and took the first right after the RR overpass onto the steep entrance to the Edgewood Shopping Center and the Met Branch Trail. Was the trail going exactly where I wanted to go? No. Did I avoid getting stuck again in traffic before getting to my destination in the West End? No. Did I ride a relaxed half mile or so bypassing the climb on Rhode Island Ave. and getting past Florida Ave. and New York Ave. on a limited access throughway? Yes.

When Danny broke his back 18 months ago, they told him he would never walk again. He walks, but he rides better than he walks. Still fixed, still brakeless.

Lots of trailers out there getting Edible Arrangements (carved fruit arranged like flowers) to moms on the last working day before Mother's Day. Edible Arrangements is the biggest user of human powered freight delivery in downtown DC.

Friday casual attire? Maybe not where he works.

Nice pictures especially the ones with bicyclists in them, The others are nice too except the one of a showroom car. That's a bit of a stretch, dontcha think? It's not my thread though, post what you like, haha. I've encouraged others to contribute. Thanks for doing so! It's not a hijack, really.

Posting pictures of bikes in Rome, in this thread about bikes in DC, is less of a stretch, I guess. The Giro will be in DC next year. I believe the moderators are considering placing DC in the Europe subforum. It's been suggested anyway...

I almost never take pictures of motorcyclists, but her pink helmet and backpack and purple/blue jacket caught my eye yesterday. I didn't even see the cool paint job on the bike until I had caught her and was taking the picture.

Mmmm, pizza! They might want to go to NYC and learn how to toss dough, that looks kinda rough. I bet you'd get fired from Pizza Hut if you put the toppings on like that!

For someone who wasn't trying to shoot bikes in a place where they're 'elusive and fleeting', you've caught quite a few with your camera! That fleeting thing is probably something cyclists do everywhere. I think they pride themselves on it.

By the way, the pictures without bikes in 'em are nice too and until the moderators agree that DC should be included in the Eurozone subforum, feel free to bring the Giro home! Tanks!

Ride report posted at my lj link below.

the passion you have in cycling, if applied 1/10th to pizza making, would help a lot

I heart C.D.

Pizza Paradiso on P near Dupont Circle makes rustic style pies. I never ate there, but I delivered 18 of their pizzas to a client once. The pizza looked real tasty. I think the order came to over $400. I RECEIVED NO TIP.

Pizza Autentica has a promising name but mixed reviews on Yelp. Anyone tried it?

"...What's my line?
I'm happy cleaning windows
Take my time
I'll see you when my love grows
Baby don't let it slide
I'm a working man in my prime"

~Van Morrison, "Cleaning Windows"

Never could figure out why this road warrior was so elusive and fleeting. I've tried to catch him with my lens before, he's fast. Aha, electric assist! Modified if you get my drift.

I heart C.D. Karzai's limo in the background

Police Week 2010

Is there room on this page for one more folding bike? They take up very little space.

Just a ride around town last Sunday.
With a stop at the Dragon boat races.

Pictures a little out of order. I'm still trying to figure out how to reorder the pictures after they have loaded randomly.

Dragon boat in Georgetown / Dragon boat setting out (team "Out of Sight", race in background) / DC line at Silver Spring
MBT, working out the kinks / Western Market / Dragon boats neck and neck
MVT, the Washington wall / MBT / Gravely Point
Police memorial / street art on the MBT

It says "Washington" on the left sleeve, but she raised her arm and I didn't get that in the shot. Yes it is a mistake. She is not a big fan Compact Discs or Certificates of Deposit

Nice travelogue, CC. You cover a lot of ground. I heard about the Dragon Boat Festival and the "Outta Sight Dragons" team of visually impaired rowers on NPR. https://wamu.org/news/10/05/17.php?ut...%3A+Local+News) Nice to see some pictures to go with the story.

I haven't managed to get anything interesting and/or in focus this week. Thanks for taking up the slack! Where is the Western Market? Looks like someplace out in the country.

I did about 40 miles on Sunday, Old Town to Silver Spring, with a work-stop in Bethesda. Typical kind of ride for me. Originally wanted to ride down MLK to Wilson Bridge, but decided I didn't want to deal with the three big hills on the way.
The Dragon boats were fun to watch. The Out-of-Sight team got a big applause, even though they finished far behind the two boats in the neck-and neck photo.

I was riding Western Ave from Mass to Oregon and stumbled on the Western Market (at Davenport St). Technically it's in Bethesda, since it's on the MD side of the street. Probably was out in the country 50 or 60 years ago.
I think there was an historical western market, but I'm not sure where it was.

Now that the MBT is paved, and they put the fence up along the track side, it's not a bad ride.

His cuff is dragging on the protective chainring guard! Probably did get a grease stain but perhaps the chainguard kept his pants from getting between the chain and teeth which is worse. Lotsa rookies out there. I tend to think if you're well dressed and helmetless, you must be from Italy, ie. on your game, but it ain't necessarily so.

Head protection, proper pants protocol. No chainguard needed, but rocking one nonetheless. On their game? Getting the jump on the cars, crossing H at 11th.

I hope everybody had a great bike-to-work day today!

I went to the rallying point near my home but I was late and most of the registrants had come and gone. I arrived hungry because I went there last year and they had way too much food, and drinks. This year they brought less food and drinks on account of the surplus last year, but more people showed up. 92 had checked in by the time I got there. There was just a little food and no drinks left, but I still managed to consume more than my share, a couple of pastries. I met some of the local bike people and said hi to a few of them I already knew.

I wasn't registered for the event, so the nice lady didn't offer me any schwag, but she gave a patch kit to a guy who felt sorry for me and gave it to me. I ended up riding into town with this guy and we each learned some new ways of getting there from each other. He was an interesting looking fellow on a cool old Raliegh three speed, but I forgot to take his picture. Search for my post from last year's bike to work day if you really want to see him. He's the guy with the pony tail done to his ass.

Thanks to everyone who worked the event, sincerely. it was great as usual. I'm going to try and help next year. I want to deliver coffee and bagels on my trailer. One less car.

Another Friday, another Bike Friday

A guy with a Blackberry taped to the back of his helmet stands by while another composes an artful shot of SmartBikes.

Build it and they will come
She received an email yesterday from the company she works for saying today would be bike-to-work day. So she got on her bike and rode to work from Takoma Park. She had ridden her new bike about five times before, never to work. Air had never been added to the tires. I saw her stopped on the sidewalk (headed home around 5pm) and correctly guessed something was wrong. I fixed her chain and pumped up her tires. I bet the ride home with 50psi was easier than the ride in with 20.

Would she have ridden to work today if the MBT didn't exist? I'm doubtful.
I told her she needed to carry a pump, patch kit, and spare tube. I asked her if she would commute again despite the dropped chains and lost air?
She said yes!

Great shot of the Memorial Bridge! And what a great story about the lady biking to work on her broken down bike. Thanks for helping her out, qmsdc15.

Richmond had a "quaint" BTW day. Actually, it was alot of fun, but a bit sparser than I was expecting, having moved down here from DC. There were about 30 people, and the Mayor came out, gave a very nice speech about supporting cycling and improving opportunities for bike commuting in the city, and rode his bike from a city park to City Hall, with all of us in a police-escorted procession. The streets were closed to cars as we pedaled through downtown. I think there were almost as many motorcycle cops in the escort as there were cyclists. It's nice to know that the mayor and city councilman (at least one) are on board with encouraging and supporting cycling as a transportation option in Richmond. It's starting to heat up, finally.

Look again. It's a painting (reproduced without the artist's consent. Maybe I should delete the post. I dunno). Moderators feel free to advise.

It's in 1100 New York Ave. which used to be the Greyhound bus station, now an office building. The history of the building is why they've displayed a painting with a bus in it. The cyclists' presence in the frame is incidental to this installation but perhaps not to the artist.

My grandmother used to drop me off here to take a bus to college. I would pocket the fare and hitch-hike.

Nice to hear bicycle commuting is getting respect in Richmond. It seems like people everywhere in this country generally dismissed the idea of bicycle as transportation until very recently. So exciting to see that changing.
