Best bike store in NY, NY
Hey,
I'm visiting New York (staying in Manhattan) from out of the US this weekend and will be looking to score some deals on clothing and parts.
Can anyone recommend any good stores in Manhattan? Won't really have time to venture further.
Thanks.

Go to Penn Station. Take the Babylon line to Wantaugh (about 30 minutes). 1 block away is Brand's Cyclery.
That is about the best you can do.

Bicycle Habitat on Lafayette & Spring, NYC Velo on 2nd Ave & 4th St., Continuum on Ave. B & E13th, Sid's on E34th & 2nd Ave. There's lots of others so grab a free bike map from any of those places and look on the map for all the other bike shops in Manhattan.

Thanks for the input. Yeah I realize shopping online is probably the best bet but seeing I'll be there and the exchange rate is pretty good at the moment I thought I'd check out a few stores.
Don't need any parts or clothing specifically, but may make some impulse purchases....there's always something bike related to spend your cash on with this sport, we all know that
Thanks again.

Not a bike store but Paragon Sports at Broadway and 18th Street, just north of Union Square, has a decent cycling department. No bargains but they do occasionally have items on sale. There's a fair chance you'll find something to spend money on.
If you can't leave the City without some kind of NYC Jersey to commemorate your visit then try Bicycle Habitat on Lafayette and Spring or Bike Works, on Ridge Street. They're not cheap but they will tell everyone where you've been.

Chari and co has a lot of nice track-specific stuff, check their site: www.chariandconyc.com
Bicycle habitat has decent selection, so does urban velo.
Not sure if trackstar is even open anymore...
Continuum has really good service/repairs but not the hugest stock of parts (at least in the showroom, not sure what's behind closed doors).
No place in NYC has good value vs. online, but (to beat a dead horse) you're paying for the convenience and expertise of the LBS' employees.

Bicycle Renaissance gives great deals. I purchased a 2009 Jamis Aurora from them for $700 (I think the list price was 950). They also gave me 15% off all accessories and lifetime free tuneups (brakes + derailleur).
The store is located on 81st and Columbus Ave. Ask for Shane.

I've always liked the guys and had good luck at NYC Velo or venturing into Queens Spokesman Cycles on Vernon BLVD.
Also it's more of a family shop but Tony's in Astoria is full of cool people.
+1000 to not being able to score any deals on anything in NYC.

Whatever money you come with, it's far better to spend it on something not bike related and enjoy the city/vacation.

-1 for Habitat. They inflate prices and the head mechanic is rude.
I really like the kids down at Dah Shop on Division St. in Chinatown. They have little by way of selection, but they are very conscientious people and good mechanics. They are one of the few shops in Manhattan that does not sell over the MSRP of goods.
For overpriced stores, NYC Velo has good mechanics. Expect to pay about twice what you would pay at a place like Dah Shop.

Buying stuff I tend to always do online... BF is a great place to get ideas/evals. So I look to a LBS for fixing/repairing.
My sister had a flat, so we walked to an amazingly close shop (Champion Cycles 104th & Amsterdam). There were a lot cheaper than the 96th street/Bway store, did it on the spot, but what impressed me was the owner telling the mechanic to put a cap on the tube they did NOT replace. So I brought in my bike for tune up and cleaning of drive chain.
Seen prices up to 200 for this set of services, they were very inexpensive at 75. AND they did a really good job, my whole drive chain was clearly throughly cleaned. Shifting was smoother than it had been, very impressive.
One small downside, I have light side-walls. Notice several greasy finger prints, obviously from the mechanic spinning the wheel. I had to clean it as I was nervikous aboiut any small residual grease on my rims!
It's a TINY shop, but has been around for a while and is family run. Very good vibe...
Have been thinking about a new bike, but money is an issue, so keeping in mind I have a very good, USA made steel frame, perhaps upgrading components can be an idea (my bike has twist shofters that I positively HATE). One question was confidence in someone assembling them correctly... think I have found a place that can do a bang up job without charging me as if I was buying a new bike!
