Google Maps

Google maps has added bicycling directions to their options. :)

Yeah, they also bought an ad on Bikeforums to promote it.

The Google bike map routes you through Queen Botanic Gardens, which has blocked bike access for the last two years.

It's in Beta and asks to report to them if any discrepancies are found.

I haven't looked into it well enough yet but I wonder if it knows where all the new bike lanes are located.

I understand that however the current maps produced by NYC clearly shows the correct bike path.
It seems that Google is using outdated source maps and makes me suspect of the product.

If I remember correctly from the beta version I looked at several months ago (they sent links to lots of people) these were not so much routes that are designated for bicyclists, but roads that could not be easily accessed with Google's truck-mounted cameras. Instead, they mounted cameras on tricycles and had people ride all the nooks and crannies taking panoramic pictures. They also advertised for people to ride around for them at one point, and I do not recall any kind of prerequisite such as knowing the roads that are suitable and open for bicycling.

I did four different NYC routing tests. No result was better than aiming vaguely toward your destination and pedaling until you get there.

Give it a couple of years.

Apparently bike/ped planners are supplying Google with KML files of where bike lanes and bike routes are located. So if yours had then it has. :p
