NYC Bikes in Buildings

Now that spring is here, I was planning on getting back to commuting by bike to work and wanted to hear any and all experiences with the new law. Has anybody gone through the NYCDOT process of getting the Bicycle Access Plan from their building, either as an employee or a tenant of an office building? I am surprised by the lack of news about this lately (on this forum and on various blogs and transportation sites, etc.) and was wondering if it is even worth my time. Any thoughts?

Wow...haven't heard of the new policy. I would bet that most buildings do not have an official Bicycle Access Plan and you'll have to start at the beginning:

1) A Tenant or Subtenant assesses the number of bikes it would like to accommodate in its office space.

2) The Tenant or Subtenant completes a Tenant Request and sends it by USPS certified mail, return receipt requested, to the Building Owner or Manager.

The Building Owner or Manager will either:
o Implement and post a Bicycle Access Plan that allows the Tenant’s employees to bring bikes into the Tenant’s office space within 30 days of receipt of Tenant Request OR
o Request an exception due to A) alternate bicycle parking facilities or B) safety concerns related to the building’s freight elevator(s) within 15 days of receipt of Tenant Request.

Thanks for the reply.

I have read all about the process on the NYDOT website - what I was wondering was if anybody has actually gone through this process, which forces buildings to come up with an access plan. How long did it take for them to come up with the plan? Did any unforseen problems arise, like odd service elevator hours or something? Stuff like that. Maybe there has been so little out there because the law took effect during the winter.
