The Long Island Thread
I don't see a popular Long Island thread on here, so I figured I'd start one. I'm in the Islip area, anyone on here ride around there?

Nope, SW Nassau.
Occasionally I'll head out to Hoffman/Railroad/Union for a Heckscher loop of 55, but like a lot of the south shore in Nassau and western Suffolk, you have to know the roads to find rides that aren't overly congested with cars and I don't know western Suffolk all that well. Yet.

there is a bike map that you can get specifically for long island that might help. it is put out by dot. you can probably get it for free as a good lbs for free.

I frequently ride with the Massapequa Park Bike Club-- Great group of people to ride with. (You don't have to be a member to ride with them.)
As a matter of fact, they got a C-ride coming up on May 15 that starts from the Islip LIRR station if you want to go on a "trial" ride with them!

I was asked to put together and lead a tour at the Peconic Bay tip of Long Island last year. The tour never materialized, but I created the route, a map and a tour page , all of which you can view at https://www.bikenewengland.com/long_island.html . I would appreciate any suggestions you might offer to improve to this ride.

Yep.. Northern Boulevard west of the Roslyn bridge is too heavy-traffic for safe cycling. Only after you get past Roslyn does Northern get better.
West of Roslyn, the LIE Service Road is actually better for biking, and even then I feel nervous riding that alone (safety in numbers!).

That said, the absolutely worst section of the Nassau portion of the LIE to ride weekdays, is the section west of Glen Cove Rd. There is often no shoulder east or west, if there's ANY kind of problem on the LIE itself, all that car/bus and truck traffic spills over to the service road and it gets downright dangerous to be there on a bike. And forget westbound thru this section between 7AM and 10AM, as well as eastbound between 3PM and 7PM.
East of GC Rd. the service road has a shoulder for much of the way and there's a bit less traffic, mostly due to the fact that there are no exits and entrances between GC Rd. and Jericho Tpk.
The NY State DOT has a bike map for LI.

>>>Tom, I'm surprised at you as you HATE the LIE !.<<<<
I think you've got your Toms mixed up! It's ME (Papa Tom) who finds the LIE service road boring as hell to ride.

I've been riding around between Babylon and Sayville since I was a kid. I like to start at my house and hit all the little town beaches south of Montauk Highway, do a loop around Hecksher, and maybe continue into Oakdale and Sayville.

Not for one second. I'm feeling a little tubby this spring, after a long year of virtual unemployment. Gotta shed a few pounds before I venture out this year!

The rain kept me in for the weekend... That and an achey lower back. The rain is supposed to continue tomorrow with some wind and then Fri/Sat/Sun sunny with temps in the 70's. Poor weather brings my biking and my Jeeping to a screeching halt...

Speaking of aching back, that's one of the reasons I got into cycling, takes away from the repetitive impacts from basketball and football. Hope cycling makes you feel better.

I did the N2SBC this Sunday. 45 degrees and pouring rain; I had a good time. I felt bad for the organizers... From the piles of event stuff all over, it looked like a lot of people didn't show up

I live on the North Shore, in Nassau County. I usually just go back and forth between Sea Cliff, Glen Head, Glen Cove and Locust Valley. Sometimes I go to Bayville or Oyster Bay. A few times last year, I went to Syosset and Cold Spring Harbor.
I sometimes ride on Chicken Valley Road through Old Brookville. I have cleared a path on Chicken Valley with a pair of lopping shears, so I guess I created a "Bike Lane", since the cars weren't using it (the right edge of the road) anyway.

I live in Port Jeff Station, most of my cycling is commuting to Stony Brook, which is a death-defying 5 miles. On the weekends I'll occasionally ride out further east. Can't say I have any "favorite" loops or rides, because I tend to battle traffic on my commute or impatient, unpredictable, nutzo weekend drivers heading out east.

Hey guys-
Ex Long Islander ( living mostly in CO now ) here, and I'm planning on heading back to LI this June for a month it's looking like. I'm going to be staying in St. James, and am looking for some people to ride with.
Also, are there any forms of racing ( preferably crits ) going on on the Island during June? I haven't decided yet if I'll bring my bike, or try to either buy a used, cheapo or find someone willing to rent one.
Thanks
John

Sheep Pasture... it seems to involve the least death. In the summers, I enjoy the ride down Nichols to South Setauket to pick up my CSA share then back out to PJS via 347, but I feel lucky to be alive every time I make that ride.
