New York to Boston Route

Does anyone have experience riding from NY to Boston? Looking for a decent route.

Route choice depends on context.

I and some friends used to ride NYC to Boston as a twin century. That placed a premium on being able to put one's head down and grind out the miles without interruption. We found out that using the Orient Pt-New London ferry was preferable to going through CT. There were just too many towns and traffic lights along the CT shore until one got past New Haven.

The overnight was spent in a Groton motel. The second day ended in Logan Airport for the trip back to NYC.

I'd be glad to post the route, if that's your speed.

Northern CT isn't bad with the lights, the ACA Atlantic Coast route goes through CT from Salisbury area east before it crosses into Massachusetts by that lake with the super long name.. :)

You might want to quantify "NY" as NY is a pretty big state and I'm sure your route would be different if you are going to Boston from Buffalo or NYC.

I'm a big fan of the CT, RI coastline and would probably approach this ride via the Orient Point/New London Ferry (east end of Long Island) onward to Mystic, Stonington, Westerly, Misquamicut, Narragansett, and Newport. After negotiating rack-n-ride service across the bridges to Newport, I would find my way to the East Bay bike path in Bristol and ride it all the way to East Providence. From there, I'm not exactly sure how to get to Boston, but SOMEONE here should be able to fill in the rest!

PS: I also enjoy riding the CT shore starting in Bridgeport and heading east. If you've got the time, skip the ferry and go this way.

Thanks for the great responses. To give a bit more context, my girlfriend is working in Andover, MA for the summer so I'm using this as an opportunity to ride up to Boston or Andover from NYC a few times. I'm actually a little north of the city in New Rochelle, so I think that might give a slight advantage to traveling through CT rather than the ferry. I'll likely try a few different routes this summer. I'll post my favorite.

SBinNYC, I'd appreciate your route from Groton to Logan.

Maybe next summer I'll try to convince my girlfriend to work in San Francisco...

One of my favorite rides ever was from Bridgeport to Newport using a mostly shoreline route through Connecticut. I've also done the piece between Bridgeport and Darien, which was real nice, for the most part. If that's an option for you, go for it; however, by hugging the coast all the way up, you'll be adding lots of miles to your trip. How badly do you want to see your girlfriend?

I'd love to hear how this goes. I live on the ire but am from brockton,ma originally. Was thinking of doing something crazy like attempting to ride home maybe make a pit stop at foxwoods!
