Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

Bus bike racks in Delaware

I'll be taking my bike on the bus from Wilmington to Dover in early November, the starting point of a bike tour. Can anyone confirm that these buses have bike racks, or might I have to wait around for a bus that has one? I have a day of riding when I get to Dover, and not all the buses on the 301 go all the way to Dover.

These racks look a little tight, will they fit a touring bike with fenders and racks? (Obviously with the luggage removed!)

I called DART, and they confirm all the buses have racks. Whether my bike will fit or not is a question I'll answer when I get to Wilmington. The worst-case scenario is one where I have an extra few hours of riding that day.

The bus I took was an inter-county bus, and it was the only one that day that didn't have racks -- but never fear! The driver opened up the baggage compartment and I slid my bike in there. The bike came out in one piece, but my derailer snapped in two later on in the tour; I don't know if there's any connection, but I'd bring some sort of protection if you're going to take one of these buses without a proper rack. (What kind of protection, I have no idea. Maybe leaving the rear deraileur in the biggest cog would help?)
