Bike Safety at Great Falls Park/ C&O Trail

I'm not sure if this is in the right place but I was wondering how safe it is to lock bikes up at Great Falls park or other places along the C&O trail (at least 10 miles from DC) to see the sights. We're not going to be gone for long (less than an hour) and it will be during the day and we aren't locking up gold here; just some 10+ year old hybrids. Right now I just have a cable lock, because crime isn't a problem in my area, but will it suffice here?
And while I'm asking this..is there anything I should definetly see in the first 30 miles or so?
Thanks

IMO, locking the bikes @ Great Falls park (I'm assuming the MD side since that's what is accessible from the C&O) is not a problem. Just don't leave anything obviously valuable on them. A fun walk is onto the islands in the rive that give a good view of the falls. Although they are closed if the river is particularly high (there is a marker on the Virginia side that shows how high the water has been at times).

Bikewashington.org has a section on the C&O with mile by mile things to see. I'd also check the COTowpath and Bikewashingtondc Yahoo groups.

Just to note talk to the Rangers office as crimes like this wax and wane. I have not heard of any theft problem at the Great Falls, Harpers Ferry on the other hand...
