Storage in NYC

Hi everyone --

I'm looking for suggestions on where to keep my bike. My building has a bike room but crammed full of junkers, so worried my expensive carbon bike will get beat up there. Keeping it in my apartment is a non starter. Anyone know of convenient place to keep it (preferably on UES)? I'm willing to pay for a spot. Do car garages do that?

Thanks,
Mark

Garages do offer paid bike storage. Not sure how it works though. If you are worried about keeping the bike in the building's bike room how would you feel about having a garage employee responsible for putting it away and taking it out? Plus what would happen to it while in their care. Most people just keep them in their apartments or the bike room.

i say find a way to keep in in the apt. i've seen where garages keep bikes, and it's generally not pretty. there are some good solutions out there for bike storage in small apartments, you may have to get creative, but i would want the bike with me if it was at all possible.

You might be able to rig up some hooks so that it sits flush across the ceiling. That really would be my suggestion. Otherwise Garages might be just as bad as the bike room you do have access to.

Buy (or rent) a house in New Jersey within walking distance of the Bergen Main Line.
Keep your bike(s) in the basement.

If you go the paid storage route - I think it's a necessity to pay a little more and make sure it is climate-controlled. Remember, in NYC it goes from 95 degrees and 95% humidity during the summer, to 0 degrees and 20 percent humidity during the winter. If I were paying good money to store my expensive CF bike someplace that I later discovered was slowly destroying it, I would be very upset with myself.

My wife and I keep both our good bikes in the apartment. We bought a free standing rack that doesn't take up much space and stacks the bikes one over the other. Helmets, gloves, etc hang conveniently on the same bars.

Maybe you could add a hanging rack to the storage room?

Keep it clean, hang it on the wall and insist that it's an art installation. Better yet, don't clean it, hang it from the wall and insist that it's an art installation.
