Another approach is volunteerism. That's a labor of love that can get old quickly. But if someone (else) rallied behind these spans as a cause, a quality of life issue, a GoFundMe campaign, etc., it could attract attention from public officials.

Or, the hybrid approach of "Adopt-a-road" programs might work better. Businesses get advertising exposure in exchange for cleanup work. I'm not saying it's very likely, but it's not unheard of.

I almost forgot this thread was started in 2011!!! LOL!
I can't believe it's been that many years. People complain how terrible things are today don't remember what it was like 7 years ago or more! Back then, you really had to ride on that roadway with trucks and cars going more than 50mph. The path was overrun with weeds and garbage. Not anymore.
If you lived in the tip of Bayonne NJ, one would have to bike 18 miles to the Hendricks Causeway to cross the Hackensack river! Other than Route 1/9 truck, there is no way to cross the Newark Bay by bicycle.

Of all the threads I started, I'm the most proud of this one. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

That's why I posted my question here. It's been several months since anyone has reported riding over the rivers, and I'm not sure anyone has ridden exactly the route I posted.

If it doesn't rain, I'm riding over the rivers tomorrow! Should be safe since it's New Year's Eve and I doubt trucks will be an issue. I rode over the rivers this summer and it was all clear! The route does not close down and over growth is far less during winter.

I did my first ride of the year to Newark on Sunday, on my way out to Morris County. While the connections between Jersey City and Kearny and between Kearny and Newark are in the same state they were in last year (sandy, but usable), the real problems now are in Newark.

The sidewalk on northbound Doremus Avenue that is meant to lead to Raymond Boulevard is so overgrown with brush that my progress on it was frequently blocked. I wasn't so much riding my bike as walking my bike, while pushing branches of plants out of the way. I really could have used a machete.

Eventually I reached a point where the brush was not completely blocking the path, so I could actually ride. But then when I got to the portion that leads to emergence onto Raymond Boulevard, I found it to be just a horrible mess of mud and rocks. If I hadn't done this ride several times before, I would not have believed that this was in fact where a bicyclist is meant to go.

This thread was created seven years ago in order to celebrate the fact that riding to Newark was even possible. And, you know, yay for that. But to see the continued neglect that this important route gets is so discouraging.
