Philly Schuylkill River Trail and Manayunk Towpath

Can someone tell me if the SRT connects to the Manayunk towpath, and if so, how does it connect back to the SRT on Kelly Dr in Fairmount Park? I'd like to start commuting to work, but want to avoid the Manayunk/Roxborough hills and on-street riding as much as possible

Thanks!

The SRT as you approach Manayunk, dumps you onto Flat Rock Road. Not much traffic, only a few blocks long before leave the paved road onto a short section of ruff cobble stones, cross RR tracks and finally onto the Manayunk towpath. Hard packed dirt here. Ok for road bike tires if dry. This leads into Manayunk and a section of board walk. Board walk and SRT ends and you must ride short road to Main St., Manayunk. I suppose legally you should ride on the narrow Main Street with traffic, but I've done the sidewalk most of the time. May be a mile of this till Falls Bridge, which you must cross with traffic, before finally reconnecting to SRT trail again. When I was in area last, about a month ago, in a car, there was construction on road and SRT just west of Falls Bridge, also ramps to Rt 1. Don't know what the final project will be.

Technically, the SRT ends at Port Royal Ave. You bear right down a short hill and ride straight onto Nixon St. Take that straight (don't rurn left under the RR bridge, turn right, cross the tracks, ride (or walk) down the cobblestones and you will be on the towpath.

When the towpath ends, go left up to Main St. by the water ice shack. Make a right onto Main St. Don't ride on the sidewalk as it's discourteous and illegal. Hundreds of people ride in the street on any given Sat and Sun in the summer.

From Main St, bear right onto Ridge Ave. Normally, you could take pick up the recreation path on the right immediately after crossing the bridge (this is not the Falls Bridge) over the Wissahickon Creek. However, that path is currently being reconstructed and is not rideable. There are detour signs directing you to stay on Ridge Ave.

At the first gas station on Ridge, turn right. You can cross Kelly Dr. and pick up the rec. path on your left. You can also stay straight, cross the river via the Falls Bridge (there is a sidewalk) and make a left onto the rec. path along MLK Drive. Note that MLK is closed to cars on weekends until the end of October between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m., although the final eastern mile (between Sweetbriar and the Art Museum circle) opens to cars at noon. Its much more pleasant (and safer) than the Kelly Dr. rec. path, which can get clogged with inatentive cyclists, joggers and walkers. TRhe MLK side also offers much more shade.

Thanks, guys...exactly what I needed to know!!

Right now, Im thinking of this as my commute to work (S. Philly to Manayunk):
SEPTA (bus #7) to 22nd and Spruce (gotta love those lovely bike racks on the bus to work!)
Hop on SRT right around the corner
SRT to the Art Museum trailhead
MLK dr to Falls bridge
Cross Falls Bridge to Ridge Ave
Ridge Ave to Main St
Main St to towpath & SRT as outlined above
Off SRT at Shawmont Ave...from there its just 1/2 mile down Umbria St to work

Not much on-street, so Im loving it

That would work. You could get on the "east bank" part of the trail where Locust St. ends at the railroad tracks. There is traffic light that allows you to cross MLK on to the rec. path.

If you are going up Shawmont to Umbria, your last section of trail will be the towpath. Note that the towpath is not paved and can get very muddy, especially just beofore the cobblestones end.
