Rental in Manhattan?
 

Hi everybody, I'm heading to NYC for a few days, was looking for a recommendation on somewhere that offers bike rentals so I can zip around town.
Probably be staying near Union Square but that's still up in the air (recommendations on hotels welcome, too)!

I believe most bike shops rent as well as sell. There are plenty of bike shops around Union Square, my personal favorite (the one I consider my LBS) is Zen Bike's in Chelsea. It's on 24th between 6th and 7th ave, the only problem is I'm not sure if they rent or not but their service is amazing (especially when you get John, the owner). The next best thing in that area that I know of is Sid's bikes and they do rent: http://www.sidsbikes.com/services/rentals

I'm not sure if those are competitive prices or not but if you google bike shops in NYC you'll get a hundred hits. There is one I know of near Central Park on 87th and 2nd (I think it's called Larry and Jeff's) and they rent to the CP audience.

One more thing to keep in mind is that the highest tourist-traffic times in Central Park and the West Side Greenway are during the day/evenings on weekends. So if you want the bikes to tour and take in the sights, you're fine, but if you want to train, make sure you go out pre-dawn. If you want the bikes to commute, try and stick to the bike lanes as NYC drivers have a certain reputation that they never fail to live up to:

I can't speak to hotels because I live here so I've never used one. But for restaurants, use Yelp and Zagat and you can't go wrong.

Very cool, thanks! The Sid place rents a Cannondale Quick for $40 a day, that's very reasonable, if not a deal. I'm not going to train (I don't train, really, I'm more of rec./transportation type of rider) so getting around town is the goal. Should be fun, I haven't been in over 15 years!

What means the "CP audience" ? Park tourists?

If you plan on letting the bike out of your sight for any extended period of time you better get a pretty good lock. The delivery guys carry chain locks that often weigh as much or more than their bicycles. Even locked up bikes get stripped for parts in this town, unfortunately.
