VT Brevets 2012
We have 7 events up here in VT this season (with possibly 2 more in
the works).
You can get all the information by going to the calendar on the NERds
homepage:
https://nerandonneurs.org/nersite/?page_id=569
On tap is:
Champlain Valley 200k, May 12, Burlington, VT
The Vermont 200k winds south from Burlington exploring the west side
of the Green Mountains and the northern Champlain Valley. The terrain
is generally rolling, with two sharp climbs in the first half of the
ride with rewarding spring views to Camel’s Hump and Lake Champlain.
Cafe stops in Richmond, Bristol and Middlebury offer the chance to
enjoy a hot beverage, soup, or baked goods while exploring early
spring in the northern Vermont.
Lake Champlain 200k/300k June 9, Burlington, VT
A scenic tour around our almost great lake.
The route tracks counter clockwise around Lake Champlain north out of
Burlington and south from Rouses Point, NY. The terrain starts tame on
quiet flat to rolling roads – and dramatically changes midway into the
ride. Rolling hills become sharp climbs and fast descents between
Plattsburgh and Crown Point, NY. Crossing the new Champlain Bridge
brings riders to Vermont farm country and a change to rolling terrain.
The ride finishes with two covered bridge crossings and a section of
dirt road as the route weaves its way back to Burlington.
There is a 200k and 300k version of this ride. The 200k takes an
earlier ferry crossing, from Essex, NY to Charlotte, VT. Riders must
declare which distance they are riding at the start and will only
receive credit if they complete that distance.
Vermont 400k, June 30. Waterbury, VT
An almost 'lap' of some of the nicest riding around our fair state.
The Vermont 400k begins in Waterbury, VT, the ‘gateway’ to the
northern Green Mountains. Riding clockwise we’ll circle the center or
our fair state – taking in Montpelier and Randolph on our way to our
‘halfway’ control at the West Hill Shop in Putney, VT. Leaving Putney
we’ll follow a short section of the Boston 600k route to the
Dummerston covered bridge and turn north to Grafton and Ludlow. From
Ludlow riders follow the scenic VT 100 north through Rochester,
Granville Gulf, and Waitsfield before returning to the start.
This route offers rural roads, scenic views, and terrain to test your
climbing fitness. Riders should be prepared for limited services on
the return leg – rural Vermont offers wonderful roads to ride – and in
some places limited places to find creature comforts.
North Country 600k, August 6, Montpelier, VT
We’re tentatively planning on using the same route as last year but
check thee web page closer to the event for updates. Below is the
description of the 2011 event:
The North Country 600k is a challenging ride which will pass through
the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, Northern New Hampshire & Western
Maine. The route will include upwards of five major climbs (and some
twisty, fun descending!). Included are “Gonzo Pass” (NH-118),
Kancamagus Pass, Evans Notch and Dixville Notch. This ride travels
through rural Northern New England- riders will need to be prepared
for limited or no services between controls and high quality lighting
is recommended – close encounters with moose are a very real
possibility! This ride will pass through many small, picturesque New
England towns and will cross several covered bridges as riders loop
east from Montpelier to Maine and back again, crossing the White
Mountains along the way.
VT Fall Classic, 114k, 200k, September 30, Burlington, VT
The Fall Classic takes in the best of Vermont dirt road cycling in the
northern Champlain Valley. 114k and 200k riders share a mix of paved
and dirt roads from Burlington to the shoulders of Mt. Mansfield. Both
routes head into Jericho with a stop at the popular and delicious
Village Cup. Populaire and Brevet Riders then part ways – the 114k
rolls back into Burlington on a mix of dirt and paved roads and the
200k turns south towards Bolton Notch to the shoulders of Camel’s Hump
into Huntington. 200k riders will tackle a final climb over Shaker Mt.
Rd. and enjoy the descent through Big Hollow into Starksboro, VT,
where dirt and paved roads bring us back to the Champlain Valley. A
well earned respite from the climbing is had on the quiet dirt roads
of Hinesburg, Charlotte, and Shelburne as the route makes its way to
the shores of Lake Champlain and back to Burlington. The 200k includes
5 major climbs and 5 covered bridges. Both routes enjoy quiet paved
roads connecting many of our favorite (and scenic) dirt roads. Fast
fun descending. Rewarding climbing, scenic views, and the chance to
see early fall color at the higher elevations. Quintessential early
fall Vermont riding.
VT events are generally self supported, with the exception of the
600k. Bring your bike, your sense of adventure, your GPS, or good cue
sheet, and come and enjoy our fair state.
