Riding in Plattsburgh Area

I'll be working on a congressional campaign in Plattsburgh this summer. I'm wondering what sort of riding there is in the area. I mostly ride road in MN, but also have a rigid SS 29er. Would it be worth bringing both my bikes, or just my road bike? Are there any clubs in Plattsburgh that hold rides so I could find some good routes? Thanks for your help.

New York State has an extensive bike route network. Plattsburgh lies right on Bike Route 9. You can go north to Rouse Point where it intersects with route 11, or south as far as you'd like.

Here's the link to the DOT's site.

You also might want to check out the Lake Champlain Bikeways, as they have rides on both sides of Lake Champlain, as well as a route around the entire lake..

There's some real fine riding in the areas surrounding Plattsburgh. Road riding, once you leave the city proper, is great in any direction. North into Canada, east into Vermont, south and west into the Adirondacks and the Champlain Valley. Off road is plentiful as well. Never been to MN, but can't imagine it being much different. There are bike clubs in the area although I don't do the club thing. Call, e-mail or just visit the website for High Peaks Cyclery in Lake Placid for a list of bike events going on. If you can fit both bikes, I'd bring them. Plattsburgh is in a wonderful region, try to get out of town and explore as much as possible.

Hoping you're coming to work for Bill Owens...... Have fun regardless.

Yep. Working for Bill Owens. I have room for both bikes up top, so they both might come along.

Cool, hope you have fun while you're here and really hoping you'll help Bill through the upcoming election. I'm about 30 miles south in Essex NY, right on Lake Champlain. I'm almost 60 but do a fair amount of road riding and I know the area well. My wife and I sail a lot on the lake and would be glad to have you and friends/Bill supporters down for a ride or for a sail and to explore. Work hard while here, I can see the machine setting up to derail Bill. Lots of money from other places entering into the dynamics. I just noticed that I am now a senior member here, I think that means you can pm me. Give it try when you come.

We just had a ride that went through the area:

Lots of nice riding on the NY side of the lake, and you can take the ferry to the VT Islands, ride south to Burlington, then cross again back to NY.
Lots and lots of options.

Mountain Riders is a local shop in Plattsburgh, never been in there, but list it on my cue sheets for my events should anyone need a fix or supplies.

Some long rides through the ADKs:

Although I no longer live in the Plattsburg area, I grew up there and visit family quite often. You may want to check out the following links. I belong to the Adirondack Cycling Team (Club) just to have people to ride with when I am in town. They're a good group and worth connecting with.
