Route 9 around Chestnut Hill, MA?

Hi everybody,
Lately I have had cause to ride around the Rt. 9 area in Chestnut Hill (Brookline, MA going into Newton). While it is not legal to ride on a state highway I am told the local police do not enforce the rule in this area. Sometimes I ride in the street and sometimes I go on the sidewalk. The road can be pretty scary for riding. What do others in the area think of the safety of riding Rt. 9 on the shoulder or in the traffic lanes? Do you use side streets as alternatives? If yes, which streets?
Best, Neil

Cyclists may use all roads in MA except limited access or express state highways where signs prohibit it. I do not know if Rte 9 is an express state highway or not, but in any case I don't ride on it as there are lots of safer alternatrives. You should be able to avoid Rte.9 in Newton or Brookline, depending on your destination.

Rte 9 is not a limited-access or express state highway -- while I don't ride that section, I regularly ride on the Natick-Wellesley section. So you're legal. Safety-wise, I don't know what the shoulder looks like in that section, so I can't say how I'd feel about its safety. Where are you going from/to?

I stay off Route 9. Plenty of alternatives. Heath St on the South Side, Beacon the most obvious North alternative. Which part exactly are you using?

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your reply. It is good to know I am legal when I am on the road.
I am usually heading to the area of the mall or a little beyond. Is Heath St my best alternative?
Thanks,
Neil

I don't know that area at all -- I don't even know which mall you mean, except that you don't mean the one in Framingham.
