Goy my CitiBike Key today. Package included a Guide, which I will attempt to reproduce here, for your edification and perusal.

I am like Totally under the impression that this is a creative commons thing, there is NO copyright notice, and it was published by NYDOT, a government agency.

What I can't copy is the $10.00 Off Coupon, good for a Helmet in New York City. Sorry about that. I have a choice of a Bern, a Bontrager, or a Nutcase, at any participating Bike Shop in NYC.

They also gave me a Gift Certificate, to get someone else started with this CitiBike BikeShare thing. Again , it has a code on it , so it can only be used by one other person.

CitiBike officially starts May 27th , but really, only those of us who signed on for a full year will be allowed to use it the first week. So figure June 2nd, 2013.

HERE is the URL for the above guide, as a PDF:

Never heard of the "bike box" before. Are they clearly marked? Do drivers respect it? Never noticed any in Manhattan.

Our bike boxes are not painted green like some I've seen in Portland, but they're clearly marked. Drivers tend to only respect them if they are already occupied by cyclists. There's one I use every morning. Though I'm confident enough to turn in the "vehicular style" and don't need the bike box, I'm glad it's there anyway.

Some of the "bike boxes" are painted green. They're around if you look. They aren't consistently placed and they aren't very conspicuous to motorists... even motorists who know where to look. I think they're more in the way of suggestions to inexperienced bikers than anything else - a reminder that yes, you can pull ahead, wait for the light, and make your left turn. Hotbike, thanks for posting those shots! A clear explanation of NYC biking rules, right from the source, could save some confusion for a lot of people.

It's not a terrible place to bike around. I like it fine. I've never personally heard of anyone getting stopped over the headphone thing, and I see folks biking with headphones all the time. FWIW I never wear them on my bike, and I've had occasion to be glad I could hear everything around me.

I can't find the photo, but I have seen NYC taxicabs parked in the Bike Box, with the cab right on top of the Bike logo.

I just shot a new photo, minutes ago, using the Mac's built in camera. It's a photo of the Citibike Key, with an imbedded RFID chip. My keychain also has a stop watch, nifty, because it works as a regular watch, in 24 hour mode, and I avoid getting a tan-line on my wrist.

the photo appears in "mirror image" mode, I'm not quite sure why, or how to flip it.

Photos from Citibike ride, 27 May, 2013:
These photos have been retouched using iPhoto, to save bandwidth, to get pedestrians feet out of the photo, and to straighten one photo to vertical.
I brought an extra bungee cord of my own, which secures my water bottle:

The Docking Cleat, which locks the Citibike to the Electronically controlled rack:

I brought my own rear-view mirror, which is attached by Velcro, seen here at around Broadway and 52nd:

It may be wise to put the mirror on the right handlebar, as most NYC Bike Lanes are on the Left side of a one way street.

The Citibike Dock has a card slot so you can put your credit card in, or use the Citibike key, which I showed you earlier. The light has to turn from yellow to green , before you can take the Bike.

Wonderful Day!

This article, although from San Francisco, is Relevant. There are pictures of Bike Lane Symbols, INCLUDING a BIKE BOX. Which is great, because the last time I tried to photograph one, in NYC, a Taxi Cab pulled up and parked right on top of it..

Follow the link and look at all the pictures, you will find one photo of a Bike Box!

I'm amazed those "1,2,3" buttons are so clear in your pictures. When I first tried to enter the codes on Sunday, I couldn't discern those three tiny circles were the code buttons, let alone to tell the digit on each. I had expected bigger buttons with all the digits 0~9. Those tiny buttons were quite hard to press, especially for those with big fat fingers. Why didn't they make it larger and bouncier?

I am Not Sure what those "1,2,3" symbols are...

They are NOT Buttons, AFAIK.

I detect a note of sarcasm in your reply...

There are still some issues to be resolved, with these machines, or they are "Clunkers", and need to be replaced?

I just realized you seem to have annual membership, so you don't know about those 1, 2, 3 codes, because you use a key instead of entering codes each time you need to get a bike. Those little circles with 1, 2, 3 are buttons where you enter the codes in order to undock a bike when you use 24 hour, or 7 day passes. All the codes are 5-digit sequences composed of 1, 2, 3 (e.g. 11233) There are not 4, 5, 6,.... I confirmed this with a Citibike employee at a station where I got my first bike (for my relative).
