Hello-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo....

Based on the lack of activity in this forum for the past couple of months, I'm feeling pretty good about not being the only wimp who puts his bike away during the winter. Wait...unless it's that the rest of you are just so busy riding that you don't have time to post here?

Anyway, I'm starting to hear birds through the snow, so it can't be long until we're all grinning and full of energy atop our two-wheelers again. I'm starting to daydream about my annual summer mini-tour, which I may extend a few days this year. Is anybody else planning anything cool for the coming riding season?

Hi there..
I check this forum every few days, but i am from PA and don't see much specific to my area. Anyway i did not put the bikes away this winter, i have been commuting to work through the winter, not every day, but when the weather is ok.

I am planning on taking my mountain bike on our family camping vacation to Colorado this summer.... can't wait.

zacster 02-26-14 06:55 PM

I've been riding every chance I get, but unfortunately that isn't much. There's really not much to talk about except snow and cold at the moment. Soon though....

I ride year round. Missed a few days when we had
one snowstorm after the other. I'll probably volunteer
again as a marshal on a few charity events; 5 Boro Bike tour,
NYC Century, NY Bike MS, etc. Now that I have a Brompton;
I'm thinking of doing some rides where I can take a train.
Philly, Connecticut, Boston, etc.

I'm racing in CRCA Saturday morning in central park. Can't wait.

New York State canal system.

Through the boredom of winter, I created a little adventure tour for 2014. 4/4/$40 (four days, 4 states, on $40) CT-Mass-VT-NY

Im doing the 150 Ride to Montaulk, Cherohala Challenge in NC, Adirondack Century, and a few others too.

Nope, you're not the only one. The cold doesn't bother me- I've built a decent wardrobe of cold-weather gear. The road conditions are the killer, though. My last ride was two months ago :(

Like you said, though, any day now. I never thought I'd be happy to see geese before, but they're signaling Spring. My biggest plan for this season is a weekend trip from NYC to eastern PA, about 90 mi away, then back the next day. It might be a tad ambitious, so I'm not sure it will actually happen this year, but I think there's a good chance of me being ready before 2015.

I've ridden six times in 2014.... but hardy enough miles/time to keep track of. Most rides were on my mountain bike so roads weren't as great a factor. I've been miserable... waiting for better weather. In January I tuned my bicycle and hung it in the garage.

This weekend the weather is supposed to warm slightly before a new storm (snow) front moves in. I am hoping for a twenty mile ride Saturday.

I desperately need a decent winter activity.

zacster 02-27-14 07:16 PM

Does beer and wine count as a "decent winter activity"?

I guess it could... if that's enough to keep you busy enough that you don't bored [or fat]. I've tried swimming (I swear I thought I could swim better than I can). I took up walking/jogging. I kept the walking/jogging.... but it doesn't work out well in winter ether. This year.. I took up weight lifting and exercising. I am keeping that too! But it isn't very time consuming.

What do you mean you "tuned" your bicycle?

noglider 02-28-14 11:09 AM

I've been riding, but less. I rode both Saturday and Sunday. I even rode to rehearsal in Brooklyn on Tuesday.

As they say in Minnesota, there's no bad weather, only bad clothing.

Well... tuned may have been an overstatement. I put on new tires, new handlebar tape, new brake pads, and a new chain all on my main road bike. A drop of oil on everything that pivoted or moved and everything inspected... then a little test ride. I took my time.... and enjoyed the effort... but it didn't take all that long.

I like wrenching during the down months.... but I don't currently have a project bike to work on. I've watched my bicycle DVDs/movies as well this winter. I could use a nice cycling book to read... maybe a trip to the library is in order.

But what I really need is more exercise. I don't bicycle for exercise... I bicycle purely for the fun of it. But I do benefit from the exercise... whether I intend to or not. It would be nice If I could find another sport/activity even close to as enjoyable as bicycling. So far.... I haven't.

I do workout. Some weights and calisthenics. About 20 minutes every [weekday] morning. They're OK. They do make me feel good afterwards but I wouldn't go as far as saying I really enjoy the morning workout... I don't think.

I rode errands and an urban safari last weekend, when it was nice. It was a bit strange to be back on the bike. Bracing for more snow Sunday night into Monday.

Current planned spring/summer/fall highlights include my third annual 3-day tour from Port Jervis to Philly Easter weekend, the Bon Ton Roulet, Youngstgown, OH to Philly, New Hope-Brooklyn and the Black Bear Century.

Low temperature is OK for me. I only avoid snow, rain, strong winds, or the nasty road with melting snow/ice. Today it was cold but I had nice rides because the streets were very empty. Last Friday I rode to a nearby UPS store carrying a big box on my rack :).

I say take this chance to ride before the streets are too crowded with cyclists, pedestrians when it gets warmer. Right now, the few of us own the streets :)

zacster 03-04-14 04:03 PM

I never find the streets get too crowded for cyclists, with 2 exceptions: Central Park and the West Side Bikeway.

The cold temperatures thins out the crowds on the west side bikeway. I think I'm going to ride to my rehearsal tonight. It's on W 99 St. It's not terribly windy, and the humidity isn't bad, so I should be all right.

More jay-walkers in warm weather ;)

Well, I already miss the cold days. As you know, today it was in the the 60s, the only warm day we have had since last fall. The streets were so crowded and noisy--used to be that I was almost the only one on the street during my entire commute.
