Peacock's General Store in Wertsville
Central New Jersey people will be saddened to hear that Peacock's General Store in Wertsville, favorite rest stop for cyclists about to attack the Lindbergh Road climb up Sourland Mountain, burned down on Friday night. I happened to ride by there yesterday afternoon as they were ripping down the last of it.
It's very sad. Wertsville was a tiny little village, and this was its only business that I know of.

Sorry for such an uninformed question (I'm from Long Island, NY), but is this the general store along the Edgar Felix Bikeway?

Darn! I lead rides for the Phillyl Bike Club. One of those rides was from Bull's Island to the store and back. What a shame. Really liked that place.

Here's a photo of what's left of Peacock's. The part that's still standing was apartments. The store occupied the ground floor on the near side of the building, where all the rubble is now. The view is looking across Wertsville road from the spot where Lindbergh tees into it. I don't have a before picture, but you can find it on Google Street View, at least for a while.

This past Saturday there was a benefit for the people displaced by the Peacock's Country Store fire. The benefit was a concert at Hillbilly Hall. I don't know how much money was raised but the place was packed! My wife and I got there early and got seats at the bar. When we left, it was an obstacle course to get out!

I looked at one of the fundraising pages for one of the residents. Over $9,000 had been donated. I also read that some of them lost pets to the fire. How sad.
