Hi all! This is my 1st posting inquiry as an oldie newbie!

Just bought Bike Nashbar Ultegra Road Bike.

1. Looking at affordable primary U-Locks with reasonable anti-deterrent

to be used in tandem. 2 U-locks for under $100.

Live upstate NY so not as worrisome as in NYC. But still want very good protection. Won't be locking bike up that often & if really necessary, it would be to run into a store to use restrooms or visiting someone's home.

With my ancient Citadel lock with only one cut shackle for the locking piece with other bar completely smooth to allow swivel - was going to use the old lock to lock bike to permanent posts & in tandem with a new Pitbull Mini U-lock to lock detached wheel & frame together with cable running thru around the wheel frame & seat rails. Or if really uncomfortable I would take the wheel with me.

Thinking is - with 2 U-locks, 2 is better than one and also - if I had to lock my bike free standing (if no solid permanent post around) thieves would have to carry the bike away. I know it just takes seconds to have it stolen but it would be rare if I needed to lock my bike up free standing.

I would be riding a few miles, resting a few, ride another few miles, rest again, and then ride straight home!

Or since I now have a new precious "baby" not yet ridden yet, use 2 new U-locks and save the Citadel to use on my kids mountain bikes IF we ever rode together & had a need to lock our bikes up.

Also, unless if you do not find my 2 choices above adequate - if you have recommendations in buying 2 U-locks to be used together, please do.

Here is my recommendation, don't lock it up, don't carry the locks, don't leave it unattended. This is your new baby so treat it like it will be stolen the minute you walk away from it.

If you want a bike for shopping get a beater bike too.

Can't those old round key style locks be opened with a BIC pen, or is that just the Kryptonite variety?

agree! better to pee behind a tree or bush! ) but I won't be riding in urban areas & leaving it unattended at all!

I've read that it didn't apply to the good ole days of U-Locks Kryptonite included until they changed the tumbler locking mechanism. Amazing how many vids there are to show this easy technique. Now just have to buy a bic pen to test it out on my old Citadel!
