New cross bike is all set to ride so you'll be able to recognize me a little easier some of the time, still have to give some of the other bikes a little love. Still need to get a new post, thought I had an old Ti Record post but discovered it was cracked while installing it. Mostly Chorus except the shifters, White Industries hubs and headset and a real head badge made of silver. Pedals are XTR since I'm going deluxe and the spoke nipples are green to tie in with the frame. Been waiting a year for this one but it was worth it. Unfortunately the next race is secret squirrel in Nov in MA since NJ canceled all theirs and NY only has a few near Rochester. Not too heavy with a real sturdy feel and spins along quick.

It is a purdy looking bike, I love the color.

Rode to Target Rock and got a flat 15 miles from home. No problem until i inspected the tire..... no bueno.

Took out the tire boot I carry and i guess after 4 years it didn't stick. No gel wrappers or paper money so I had to just be very careful not to gt a pinch flat.

Anyone know an experienced bicycle mechanic looking for a job? PM me if you do.

Cool, but HUMID! Small group from home to Crab Meadow Beach, 51 sweaty miles.

Back to back stellar days, back to back 36 mile rides, back to back rest stops here. One solo ride and one group effort.

Believe I saw Steve B northbound in Bethpage as we had a post ride coffee.

Yes, you all were at the BP bagel shop ?, I should have turned around and said Hi, apologies. I had a 11AM delayed start while my plumber installed a new toilet. Great day for a ride, I skipped yesterday, too windy.

I might have seen Glen heading south on Seamans Neck Rd as well, not sure if it was him.

I think you might have seen Joel J., he had to get home and he does head that way.

Nice ride....

Just realized that you can download your activity data from Garmin Connenct to an Excel spreadsheet. With that I can generate graphs and different stats. I plan on graphing my average speed per 100 miles over the year. I know it's increased but i'd like to see it visually in a graph.

Another windy day.. 54 miles and a new PR taking Seaman's Neck south.

Homeschooling the kids has helped fill my days while BMX track, velodrome and parcore for the kids in the evening has kept those busy but the youngest finally learned to ride without the training wheels. Now that he doesn't need the trainers he wants to go to the BMX track and MTB. Decided we would start with Hempstead lake and thurs I'll bring him to Shoreham with the middle child to practice on the kiddie track they have there. He wants to rock a full face which we have from ordering the wrong size last year, was clearance and I'd have gotten 10 back after return shipping so its been waiting while I've been hoping.
So best ride of the season so far, only 2miles but knowing I won't be pulling him Last pic is first effort without the trainers. I've thought he could for a while but he was too scared to try till I told him if he could do a full lap of the church parking lot without help all by himself he could pick any lego set he wanted. 20 min later he finished a full lap and demanded to leave for his legos.

Another windy day... 53 miles.

The constant 10+mph wind is getting old.

kaos joe 10-14-20 05:52 PM

It was really blowing out on the East End, but oddly enough Shelter Island was relatively windless. I guess the name is apt.

Went out to Mattituck with another tandem couple and rambled around the North Fork and Shelter I. Gorgeous day which called for the red menace Bilenky tandem. We managed, between stopping here and there, ferrying twice, and a long lunch in Greenport, to turn a 49 mile ride into a daylong affair. It was great.

Cedar Creek was rough, headed out with my daughter but the wind was keeping everyone slow. Most roadies passed us but we got to do a little passing of our own one of which was hilarious. My daughter decided to take her pink bike rather then her road bike, yup, she has a fleet. The pink bike is a mid 80s Giant lugged road bike with cheap steel wheels that we bought NOS a few years ago for a friend and their kid outgrew since. This summer we put flat bars and thumb shifters on it with a doll sized kid's seat.
So my daughter is happily riding this pink thing when we start approaching these guys in their 30s that looked in ok shape, as we got close one looked back to see if anyone was approaching and then did a funny wide eyed double take as this 10yo girl in a pink shirt and blue overalls with rainbow sneakers on a bright pink bike with doll carrier is overtaking them. They did actually try to speed up but it didn't help and just meant we took an extra 1/8 mile to pass as the other shook his head and both stared at her as she passed them. I figured cheap bikes but a Gary Fisher MTB and a shop brand hybrid, guess they were just slower then they thought. Based on times we only averaged a touch over 10mph into the wind, the return trip was closer to 16mph.

GlennR 10-15-20 02:42 PM

20mph out of the S with gusts to 36mph. I almost got knocked off twice.

21 miles was enough.

It's seemingly relentless. We had mother-in-law duties and were in the mood for a short dead flat ride after yesterdays extensive Shelter Island wanderings, so we headed to the beach and clocked 30. The wind more than made up for the lack of hills.

Some friends headed up to backpack in the High Peaks in the Adirondacks, (sadly couldn't join due to aforementioned M I L duties). They climbed Phelps Mtn and reported that at the 4160' summit, the wind yesterday made it difficult to stand.

Steve B. 10-16-20 12:04 PM

I was at Minnewaska State Park Thursday riding the mt. bike with 2 buddies, beautiful day, the wind only affected us at the many cliffside views and it wasn't too cold, we rode in shorts (first time I've done that in October up there, it's at 2,000 ft.). It's a busy park these days, was dodging hikers everywhere. They "used" to open early and you could start riding at 7:30-8 or so and not pay the parking fee. Now it's everybody gets on line for the 9AM opening, which is just a stupid system, but they do get the $10 out of you.

Great views at peak leaf season Trails (excepting the loop around Lake Awosting) are easily ridable on a road bike with 32mm tires, so next time I'm taking my gravel bike. I'm also camping locally as the drive home was near 3 hrs.

kaos joe 10-18-20 10:35 AM

Yesterday. Windy but better than other days of late. Cold Spring Harbor round trip from home. Today, finally, windless and cool......rode up to Laurel Hollow and Oyster Bay. The waters were calm and glassy. Five minutes after turning south for the return, a stiff headwind sprang up.:troll:
